Up until a few years ago in our county in was mandatory for motor vehicle operators planning to visit the county courthouse to notify the sheriff that they were going to visit so that all the people driving horse & buggies could be forewarned.

I forget whether it was Washington or Idaho but back when (50's or might have been into the 60s), if you were drinking at the bar and wanted to move to a table you had to get a waitress or waiter to carry your glass over. It was supposed to keep men from hitting on the o, so innocent, women.
