You nailed it on the head Robby. The dang ground is just too hard since the drought set in. I've been rebuilding all our fences since last year and have had the same problem. I had to do exactly what you're doing, carry buckets of water to drill holes. It's gotten a bit better since we've gotten some rain lately, but I still hit some hard going from time to time. The ground was so hard last summer that I couldn't drive a t-post with a 10-pound sledge, standing in the bed of my truck. Beats all I've ever seen.

you can add weight on top.

make shure your cutting edges are sharp

make shure your 3 pt lever is set to lower it down lower.

If you spin it to slow you risk screwing it into the ground. then your really in for a treat!

You are so right, sir. There's nothing more fun than digging out an auger that's buried up to the gear box, especially when it's 105 degrees and the ground is as hard as concrete!

I GOT TO LOOKING AT MINE AND THE TIP WAS IN BAD SHAPE. WENT TO TRACTOR SUPPLY, THEY HAD TIPS BUT WITHOUT THE CUTTING BLADES. ENDED UP BUYING A NEW AUGER FOR $129 AND IT WORKS LIKE A CHAMP. OF COURSE, ON THE SECOND HOLE I DUG I BURIED IT AND BROKE THE PIN. FUN, FUN, FUN

I have a Speeco unit and mine quit digging 2 seasons ago. I have decomposed granite and digging is a chore at any time. I ended up replacing the entire auger when i noticed that the entire end of the cutting area (ie the first 6-8" from the tip) had been worn down so much as to be an inch narrower that the rest of the flighting.

It started to dig alot better after that, but still sucked overall. I added a power down assist unit to mine, but Speeco didn't have the exact model to fit my 10 YO auger so i had to modify it. But MAN does this baby dig now. Its a single acting down assist so i don't have to worry about burying the thing. All i have to do is lift the 3 point and the down assist quits.

I was told it adds about 300# of down pressure (and can be adjusted for more/less) . It drills a hole FAST.

Mine would not drill in the ground either. I tried water and two men hanging off of 2x12 away from auger. It took me most of the day to drill 7 holes. I called a guy with a skidsteer and auger and he knocked out 15 of them in 40 minutes. He charged me 10 bucks a hole and 50 bucks in travel time. Money well spent. It would have taken me two days at least to do the 15 by myself.

Dont despair, every third or fourth commercial on tv nowadays has a remedy for that problem
