Tons of questions come to mind...

Is your 5030 gear or HST?
What kind of tires do you have?
Are you running any additional ballast (filled tires or wheel weights?)
What ground speed are you using?
and
Do you find yourself running out of either traction or hp on a heavy cut?

Tim:

I'll try and answer your questions the best I can:

Is your 5030 gear or HST? HST
What kind of tires do you have? R4
Are you running any additional ballast (filled tires or wheel weights?) Filled Rear Tires (Methanol)
What ground speed are you using? Medium
and
Do you find yourself running out of either traction or hp on a heavy cut? Traction

My comparison is based on using a 7' box blade verses a 6' scraper. The 6' scraper (model DB6) takes less horsepower and traction to fill than the 7' box blade does. I have a Top and Tilt kit so the box blade worked well but required the rippers in order to fill the box blade in hard clay. The angle of attack when stricking the dirt with the box blade is like a peeling action verses the scraper is a slicing action.

If you were not trying to fill (heaping) the scraper to its maximum capacity, you could use a 25 hp tractor and easily average a 75% capacity load per trip. The horsepower and weight of the tractor is needed for the last 20% of the filling of the bowl. I operated mine without the FEL and had no problems filling the scraper until dirt was rolling over the sides. If I needed more traction, I would have added the FEL.

FYI, I e-mailed Jason and he said that the scraper in the movie is a DB-5 and the JD is a 4400. That should let everyone know a little more about what one could expect.

Thanks for the info. That helps. The price difference between the DB5 and DB6 is so small that if I can ever justify either, I'd lean toward the bigger unit - so long as I felt my tractor could run with it. We're probably close enough in tractor power/traction that I could expect roughly comparible performance with the DB6.

I am going to look at a 6' model tomarrow. They are built about 120 miles from me. 20 miles from the grand kids /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
So what range and ground speed were you running?

I wonder how it would work in softer material....Seems like you might start to spin before you could load it. Looks like a nice attachment though. Love to find one used.

WVBartMan, I do not mean to hijack your post. I went out to meet him and learn a little. As much dirt work as I do I am getting one. He does not belive in under cutting the dealers. But will sell to any one at list price. He said he will be a the big farm show in CA. and Lousville KY after that. I took some close ups to share.
