I am very new to this and I get the feeling my dealers might be trying to sell me to much deck. Do I need to go to a smaller deck? The tractor ways 2000 pounds what weight group should my deck be in?

Well, are you sure that you want a RFM (rear finish mower)?, or would you rather have a MMM (mid-mount mower)?.

After some more research I am considering a flail mower.

Caroni TL1500FSC 59" 88 blade 485lb. I have decided agility and less weight is key for me. What do you think? Am I on the right track?

Depends on what your trying to achieve. If you want a nicely groomed lawn, than a flail mower can give a fairly decent cut with sharp blades. Albeit not as nice as a pure finish mower, but it will be close. Have you decided on whether or not you do in fact want a rear mower?, or would you rather have a mid mount mower? If you like the feel of a riding mower than you could get the 62D "drive over" 62" mid mount mower deck for the 2x20 series tractors.

If you want a flail make sure you get one with grass flails on it. They are different than brush or heavy duty flail knifes. on my Alamo they attach differently with a pin instead of a d-ring.

If you are just mowing grass, a grass knifed or fine bladed flail will mow great...but don't use in brush it will destroy the knifes. for general grass and light brush use a standard duty knife and it will mow very well. Hammer knife or forged knifes mow very tall wet grass and brush very well.

My knifes are well worn but I still like it better than my Rear finish mower or my zero turn on the year yard!!

As mentioned, I have a 2520 and use the Frontier GM1072R. I have very hilly property and I have to mow in 4WD all the time. I also keep the loader frame on and have three rear wheel weights per side.

While it is a little bit of a handful for the tractor to move around, I have been absolutely thrilled with the cut quality. In fact, I think the cut quality is better than the 62D MMM, mainly because the rear mower follows the contours of the land better.

I've used it for 2 1/2 seasons now with no problems. The 2520 has plenty of power for this mower, so I'm sure the 2720 could handle it.

Best of luck with your decision.

I would have to agree with you there Runner.I've been cutting Seven Acres with a Frontier GM1060R made by Woods and it's great. The only thing that I had to do to it in Eight yrs. was replace the belt it had a cut in it and keep the blades sharp.24 Hp. and 20 pto is plenty power for what I use it for.HKCHEF Speaking of dealers I use a 5103 for a widow I help out you should see the lip go up when they see or I tell them what I use it with.

Maybe you ought to take that money and spend it on some higher ground:p All kiding aside, I have a
Bush Hog brand RDTH finish mower, 60 inch and built like a tank. No problems in 6+ years (other than a pain to clean the underside). Sorry to hear about your flooded property. Always hate to loose those mature trees (among other things).
