The Bigger The Tractor, The Less You Use It.....

For me the statement is false. 120 acres and a Farmall A and a Kubota 5030.

The biggest variables are the size of the land and the abilities and newness of the two tractors.

Now if I had a JD B and a BX23 I would use the BX23 more.

Jim.
It is horses for courses, as simple as that. A few years back when i was farming i had a ford Dexter, a 70hp Chamberlain with a fel and a 116 hp Chamberlain. each had their own place and they were used accordingly.

How much bigger and compared to what?

If you are comparing your "BX" to my "B,” I don't think there will be a lot of change. I find because I have a larger tractor than my neighbor does (He has a BX23) I take on larger projects.

If you are comparing your "BX" to a "L" series and bigger that may be true.
The same thing may apply though since larger equipment allows one to take on larger projects.

A tractor is just a tool - ideally it would be nice to have several tractors so you could pick the right size for the job at hand. But they are more expensive than wood saws. I have maybe 25 of those, from small to big, hand and power. But my tractor selection is limited to 2, a 12 hp Sears for home lawn maintenance, and a 60hp for field mainenance and other jobs. A dairy farmer nearby has several tractors - his smallest one is much bigger than my "big" one. And so it goes. Depends completely on your place and what you are doing on it.

The problem with this statement could also be that pto rpm hour meters are generally fitted and ag tractors live around PTO speed many hours of their life. Idling around doing loader work in a CUT may take 5 hours to put 1 hr on the meter.

( CUT have been around in earnest for about 25 years and I have never seen one with more than 5000 hrs on it but there are a whole slew of 25 years old AG and even utility tractors with way more hours than that. The mechanic at a shop I go to owns a JD 1120 with 16 000 hrs on the meter, original motor,no major overhaul, only a couple of sets of new fuel injectors, granted this one is more than 25 yrs old, its a 1974 I think ,but still....
If your statement was true we'd be all discussing our Sears 5HP garden tractor /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif )

I have a one year old BX2200 Kubota subcut...65 hours...and those are real time hours.

My B2910 Kubota CUT is two years old and has 460 hours on it and those are tachometer hours. I estimate seat time is probably about 700 hours...

Both tractors were purchased in July, so they are exactly 1 year different in age...

So for me, the smaller the tractor, the less I use it seems to apply... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
