Comparison The Bitterness of Poor Quality Remains Long After the Sweetness of Low Price is Forgotten

One thing that throws a fly into the ointment here is that the best quality and value are not always the case with the highest priced items. I know a lot of people (many on this forum) who automatically assume if something is more expensive, it must be better. That is definitely true quite often, but if you blindly use that as a manner of choosing what to buy, you could be paying a lot for a false sense of security. Often the more expensive item perceived as having higher quality has similar quality as a competitive but lower priced item, but the company has spent a lot more effort into marketing to create the perception of better quality. I feel John Deere falls in that category. John Deere makes decent CUT tractors, but are they tractors of a higher quality that justifies their higher cost? Not from my observations.
True words, but common sense has to prevail with anything - homework is always required!

The saying that fits this best, IMHO, is "there's a sucker born ever minute."

Sales people drool over people with this attitude. If it costs more, it must be better, right? That's why auto manufacturers have luxury lines. They add a few hundred dollars of upgrades and sell them for thousands more.

Buy for value, not price. What do you actually get for your money? Economist 'measure' satisfaction in "utils". For one person, a nearby dealer is worth more utils. For another, more dealerships is worth more utils. For some, paint color yields utils. We all value this gs differently, but ultimately want the most utils for the least money...except those people for whom higher price is actually a util. Perception is reality

I'm pretty sure that even JD realizes they don't offer the best quality or best value considering they don't actually bother to stock anything smaller than the 5E series on this country and also on some countries around. They realize they just can't compete with everyone else, plus there are a lot less fanboys wiling to special order an overpriced JD tractor for the sake of it.

The only good competitive compact tractors they had, was back when JD used rebadged Goldoni compact and specialized tractors and sold them under their name with the green/yellow paint. Some models even had JD engines instead of the Lombardini ones. An interesting fact about this ordeal, is that JD offers little to no support for these rebadged tractors, contrary to popular belief. They didn't even bother to add the parts catalogs for these tractors on their parts catalogue website.

I was just visiting a cousin of mine today. Took him some collards and kale. He is the last one in his family home. They have it for sale now and it is a commercial property now. The place takes you back to the 50s and 60s. Everything was taken care of and kept in its place. I asked him about their garden hoes and he gave me one. That hoe to me is an example of quality. I could not find a good garden hoe at any modern hardware store. And those are priced at 50 to 60 bucks.

I know it is just a garden hoe but man am I happy to now have it. He also gave me an older diesel can. Tickled pink with that as well because you can no longer find decent ones now.

My tortoise eats collards and kale. I buy it every week. :)

I have a few of my grandma's garden tools. They just feel good and sturdy when you use them. (y)

21 years ago I went to a JD dealer and asked about a new machine on their lot that I was interested in purchasing. He basically said "There it is" and walked away. So did I. ;)

Does not say a thing about the quality of the machine. But man, that left a lasting bad impression.
I am in full agreement .... same thing happened to me, that was just a few years ago..

I think you should. If nothing else to make sure you're still making the correct choice as the consumer. I guess maybe you're boycotting JD because of right to repair then I get it.
Right to repair is one of many reasons.

Nothing else was all plastic with an aluminum rear end housing. It was never in the running.

About 25 years ago I walked in a JD dealer and looked at riding mowers. I finally asked the salesman what made their mowers worth 3 times what a mower at Walmart costs? He said if I had to ask that I shouldn’t be in there, I left.

Fast forward to about three years ago, and I still had the attitude JD was overpriced. I called on both a used JD and another Kubota dealer on a used Kubota. The Kubota dealer blew me off and the JD dealer said you’ll be surprised what I can get you into a new tractor for. A couple days later I bought a new 2025r. At that time they had a lot of discounts.

I visited the dealers website a few days ago. The JD salesman that sold me my tractor is still there and his title is something like “turf sales”. In other words they have a guy selling homeowner stuff. This place also sells 6 and 7 figure ag equipment. It shouldn’t be luck of the draw that you get a salesman that actually cares about what you want but that’s the way it works sometimes.
