The blurry line between CUT and UT???

We had gone to the dealer to look at 5000 series tractors. There was a 6000 series in the service department that I climbed aboard. I just had to have one. And at the time, there was no PST or GST tax on the 6000 but was on the 5000 making the choice easier.

Shortly after buying the machine I got a call from JD following up. She said "I understand you just bought a Utility Tractor". I felt a little offended, as I thought we had just bought the biggest tractor in the world!

Anyway, it's large frame and yet only around 70 PTO HP!

That is definitely a utility tractor! Good looking tractor.

(for a consolidated definition CUT vs UT please reference Post #70)

That's just coming back from spending eleven grand or so on a different transmission and power reverser. What we should have bought in the first place. Note the mangled steps. A $300.00 oopsie, fixed now. Tractor is circa 91 and only has 1200 hours.

I wonder how long it will be until an unquestionable UT (something in the 6000 to 8000 pound range for the bare tractor) comes with an HST option? And my DS4510HS has no HST option but is clearly a CUT by the ASAE definition.

When you mention 60hp and cat. Cat 1 and 2 ends the Kioti NX comes to mind. The base version of this series meets all requirements of the CUT definition. So I think of all the NX series tractors as CUTs because they are on a base Platform that is clearly CUT.

But the NX does really push the definition! I certainly would not argue with anyone who called a 60hp NX a UT. Even though I would not agree with them, it is so far into the grey area that that I wouldn't disagree either. The DK55 on the other hand is clearly on a larger frame than the NX. The lower hp DK55 is clearly a UT to me while the NX is a CUT that has been fattened to exceed the normal CUT definition. It comes back to the platform it's built on, the size of the components.

Would this one qualify? It's over 6000 lbs with optional hydrostat.

Edit: I believe the hydrostat was standard on the IH 656.

I was always impressed with the meaty front axle and wheels on those Internationals. If they had offered those in 4wd, they would probably have been a little monster.

Oh now that's interesting .... !

I've seen one or two for sale around here in the last year. One was absolutely gorgeous...low hours, and stored inside. I can't recall what they were asking for it, but it was reasonable.

You beat me to it npalen. IH made lots of hydrostatic tractors. I'm not positive what the largest was, but they definitely put a hydro on a 1066@125 PTO HP and an operating weight of 12,000#. That, my friends is even bigger than a utility tractor (at least by the standards of the day). A partial list of their hydro tractors includes: 544H, 656H, 666h, 70, 84, 86, 186, 100, 966h, 1066h, 826, and 1026. The small frame ones are still used extensively for veggie growing. They offer an infinitely adjustable ground speed relative to PTO speed and can be had cheap in many cases. Great for running tillers and transplanters.

Here's one for sale near me: IH 186 Hydro Tractor

Regarding the 656, they aren't all hydro. Probably a small percentage, really. The standard transmission is a 5F1R with a 10F2R torque amplifier transmission also available. Interestingly, the hydro transmission on the 656 would do 21 mph on the road.
