We moved to the northwest about 30+ years ago from Texas. We miss sitting out side in the evenings and listing to the Cicadas. We all so miss the june bugs but we sure don't miss the screw bugs!

What is eating the leaves here in NW Ga and probably over your way is the spring canker worm or perhaps the fall canker worm..........to most, known as the inch worm.........We are having real problems for the 2nd year now with trees losing at least 50 to up to 80 or so percent of leaves...........

For me, the little black crap specks all over the deck....hard tiny balls...........and then the catepillars dangling by their webs of all over everything........BAD stuff..........

I am not seeing any of that webs, worms or poo so I do not know what is eating the leaves. I looked yesterday and could not see a think except chewed leaves.

I did finally see some a few cicadas though. I really like the sound of them. :D

The last time they visited I was on a kayak on a local lake. I was on a part of the lake with no motor boats. This part of the lake was maybe 1/2 mile across and a mile long and I was in the middle of the lake with the cicadas singing. It was VERY loud but very cool.:laughing:

I stumbled upon this news story: US states braced for cicadas invasion as they hatch after 13 years underground | Mail Online

I haven't seen/heard any yet (in Upstate SC). How about in your neck of the woods?

Steve

They been here for at least a month. There a constant drone when outside all day here! Looking at the sky you will see one if you look for 5 seconds in ay direction. Smash about 10 on my way home with the winshield/hood everyday. There stuck to the windows all the trees and have piles at the bases of the trees. If you walk under my magnolia tree in the day literally hundreds will fly off of it. The bodies are all over the ground of the matted and dead ones and the ground looks like someone shot it with 000 buck shot from 100 feet up the holes are everywhere. Im only 29 but have never seen this before! Yes every year you get the 3-4 stuck to the wood shed or a couple on each tree and can hear the individual drone of a dozen or so but this is so loud its all you hear!. Everywhere i work Between Augusta GA and Linconton GA and my Home in Greenwood has them you cant get away!!! Suppose to be here for another month i hear!!!

White grubs are also june bugs jap. bettles and pretty much anyother beetle of that size. Your not far from me so if your getting them they would have been out by now. I dont doubt there are stragglers though.

The 13 yr cicada are smaller and have red eyes, supposedly different than the normal summer ones.

Also these things are so prevellant if you wear green or a bright color they will land on you. I was holding 2 t posts and i one minute 3 landed on them while i was holding them. As i weedeated last week end i looked on my shoulder as i felt them landing and i had 3 on my shoulder and maybe one on my chest and i think one on my shoe or leg as well. They are literally everywhere.

Took some pics yesterday. One is a pile of them at the base of a tree in my yard, the next is my fence and the shells are holding the fence. Two weekends ago they live ones were like this on the fence! Next pic is my deer hauling cart and just a shot of the tire and all the shells on it. Last pic is at the end of my carport, i did not arrange them for the picture, yess there not this dense all over the yard or concrete but this is no exception. NO matter where you go you will see at least one if you just look down.

I have seen a few more flying and on the ground, but for all of the noise they are making, I would think I would be seem far more cicadas.

Amazing sound. I recorded a few minutes of sound over the weekend. This morning they were not very loud. It might have been too cool for them to make noise or maybe they are starting to end. :(

On our local county website/BBS someone was blaming a sewage cleaning service for the cicada noise. They thought the sewage equipment was making the noise. :D 'Course someone else thought it was UFO's when the noise first started. I THINK they were joking but in my county who knows.:laughing::laughing:
