Missouri must have the worst Interstates in the country, so banging along I44 one day, I was proud to see a sign saying, "When Cardinals build highways, we'll build them a stadium." I don't think it will work out that way, however.

All of these large companies lost their behinds in the stock market after 9/11 so they cranked up the prices to meet their costs and then never lowered them to enjoy more profits. I've seen budgets passed through that said I need $50,000 to do this function (when actually you only need $30,000) and then they get funded at $40,000. The key is that these places try to use up the entire amount in their budget that way they can request more next year as opposed to getting their budget cut because they didn't spend all their funds next year. Budget's are no longer about how much you need but how much can I get!!!!!!!!!

KubotaSteve,

Hey, you live just across the river from me!!!

Do you ever go to the Sheperdstown Farmers Market?

</font><font color="blue" class="small">( I like pop in bottles. It just tastes better. IBC Root Beer, Cream Soda and Black Cherry Soda. $3.35 a six pack. Ouch! But I love the look on the girl's faces when they get bottled pop. They know it tastes better, too. That's my only vice(besides the tractor). )</font>

Walmart has bottled soda in 6 packs for $2.50. We pick up a 6 pack each of Orange and Grape Crush when we go there, but they also have root beer and cream soda too, but I don't remember what brands. I remember drinking Crush out of the glass bottles when we were growing up, and Walmart is the only store around here that still carries it.

Uh oh, I mentioned the "W" word. Sorry about that! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Anyhoo, is it "pop", or is it "soda", or is it "soda pop"?

</font><font color="blue" class="small">( Houston must be Charlotte's sister city. I haven't had a raise that kept pace with inflation since 1995.
The taxpayers voted no on a new arena. The Hornets left town (GOOD!).
Less than a year later, Charlotte is building a new arena for a new roundball team we didn't even have. All at the taxpayer's expense.
Other than the Carolina Hurricanes hockey, I have not been to a pro sports game since 1996.
You won't ever see me at a basketball game.
You won't see me at a football game.
You might see me at a Single A or Double A baseball game.
You might see me at a hockey fight when a game breaks out. )</font>

Amen brother! When the last Cleveland Browns left town and the new expansion team was created, they (we) spent hundreds of millions of dollars on a new stadium that will only be used EIGHT TIMES A YEAR. How can taxpayers allow their money to be spent that way?

I stick with minor league baseball. The players actually talk to you and the hotdogs taste better.

Spring training has started! the Mets are training about two miles from where I'm sitting. Once Spring training is over, the St. Lucie Mets play minor league ball all summer. Interesting, the stadium was built by a developer, Thomas White from St. Louis. He bought 6 square miles of ranch land and developed a "city within a city", St. Lucie West, which is a part of the City of Port St. Lucie, but is also a Special Taxing District with their own representatives. He wanted a real marketing advantage, so he built the stadium and donated it to the county recreation department. It was set up so he'd get his investment back over 25 years, but only from stadium revenues. It has proven to be a real asset to the area, so the county has spent some money on renovations and improvements to secure the Mets contract -- but only from tourist bed tax dollars, which locals seldom pay. In other words, it hasn't cost the local taxpayers a cent from general revenues.

He also paid 100% for an Interstate exit on I-95, the first one ever to be built entirely with private funding. Finally, he built the requisite golf course, but it has been purchased by the PGA, which has built 4 more courses and their international golf school (along with an upscale housing development, PGA Village, where retired pros from all over the country have built homes, and teach in the school).

All of this brings revenue to the area and benefits the local businesses. For example, Jim Awtrey, the President of the PGA, has a home here, and we built his outdoor kitchen. We built 3 outdoor kitchens for one retired golf pro, who built a house for himself, then married and built one for he and his partner, then divorced and built yet another.

Our economy has never been better.

Over 6,000 homes were built in the city last year, and it's looking like a substantial increase this year.

Or course, it's getting too crowded, so my wife and I are moving out...

Here's a comparison for you. A little over 10 years ago a cellular telephone was $1000 to $1200 and the size of a stack of bricks. They didn't work very good either. Today a phone that fits in your shirt pocket can be had for free with a short plan and work almost everywhere near major cities. Is that a deal or what??? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You have an excellent grasp of the situation.

<font color="red">"The only thing holding it up (temporarily) is the US gov is borrowing & borrowing (thus bringing more money into circulation). Thank your stars for the deficit. Private people aren't borrowing fast enough." </font>

Very true. I am one of them. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
We paid off all three vehicles, paid cash for my tractor and implements, and pay cash (or debit card) for most everything we buy. We only owe a house payment and 2 credit cards.

<font color="red">"If you want to know why your standard of living HAS to be forced down, just add up the percentage of people who consume (eat, buy gas, etc) who don't put anything into the pot. When you look at THAT ratio, you realize that the people who work and produce things have to accept less and less for what they do so there's enough to support all the others." </font>

AMEN, brother!
We won't even discuss those kinds of people. Makes me fume! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Look at the prices of computers compared to what they were 10 years ago.

Now the cell phones are made in China AND you can buy them at Walmart! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
