I hadn't heard that. He seemed like a genuine person even after becoming famous. I grew up listening to him along with Merle Haggard and a few others. On a stormy day I find myself thinking "Rain dripping down the back of my neck" ... especially if I have to work in it.

From the same song..."a man could wake up dead" is a line I always think about when I've found myself doing something stupid.

I seem to recall some anecdotes about many folks first hearing some of his recordings did not realize he was a black man...

The press releases accompanying his first records had no photographs. Chet Atkins signed Charlie to a deal with RCA. A bold decision at the time.

I've heard him referred to as the Jackie Robinson of country music but i'm pretty sure there was a black guy who performed on the Grand Old Opry in the 20s, THE 1920s.

He was loved by his piers. To me, that says it all, your peers really know you. 2 peers, which ones correct!
