As a consultant for 18 yrs I saved every receipt for tax purposes. Many of them became unreadable after a few years. Glad my statue of limitations is up for having to keep em. They are basically blank sheets of paper now.

I know the IRS wouldn't give a hoot about the fact that they don't store well. Always wondered how that would pan out if audited.

I read another related, recent “study”, claiming banknotes, aka, $ bills , are also dangerous for our health as they measured the same BPS, (and also cocaine) on almost all bills. The “study” hypothesis is that people put receipts in their wallets touching their money , and so it transfers to the bills.
Something else to worry about.
Another reason for a digital currency society

I hope I'm long gone when digital currency becomes the norm. I don't like the prospect of every transaction being logged somewhere.
That having been said, I'm sure there are all sorts of germs and other nasty things on currency.

I usually buy the small double patty cheeseburger deal at McDonald's and get another for one dollar. I live alone and often buy six or eight burgers that way. Two to three burgers make a meal. Most times times each burger has a receipt stuck to the paper it's wrapped in. Rarely one receipt only, is stuck to the outside of the bag. The receipts have stickum on the back. Next time I buy a bag, I intend to subject the first one to the fingernail test.

The issue of handling thermal paper has been known for years and is a real problem but no one reports on it.

Enter "thermal paper hazard" into any search engine. It is a real problem.

I cringe when I see people putting their receipts in their mouth to free up their hands while they walk to the exit of their favorite big box store.

Tell me about it. I once used my card at a convenience store. The next thing I knew, I was in their email list. The only way they could have gotten that is from my CC provider. I went in and complained to the manager, and also got rid of the card.

Don't they get soggy when re-heated? Always have for me.

I don't think they're as tasty when reheated but haven't noticed them being soggy. I put one on a plate for 40 to 50 seconds and set the microwave on 4. If meat is reheated too hot it ruins the taste imho.

Saw this study too—thermal receipts can carry more chemicals than you’d think. Around the hospital, the printers spit them out constantly, so we started using gloves for small tasks. For labels that actually need handling a lot, we switched to an Epson Colour Label Printer for wristbands and tags, and those come out clean, bright, and safe to touch.
