What I do is cut slots in the stone.

Then I break them off.

Cruel I know. But necessary.

If you look you'll see a flaw I caught in time. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

First I take the quick saw (Stihl 510 electronic) and remove most of Oklahoma, Louisiana, New Mexico, Mexico, and the Gulf. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif )</font>

Be careful around El Paso and Brownsville. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Did you have the pieces notched or was that your doing? Mighty fine work Harv. Thanks for the shots/information.

P.S. My Dad was from El Paso. Lived there right on up to about Dec 8, 1941.

I notched it with the Stihl. I'll do the finish work with the angle grinder or the worm drive.

Allow me to climb upon my stump for a minute.

I have one large advantage over most other folks when it comes to making things. That is the ability to see the project as a series of small steps instead of a big journey.

This stone is a case in point. Making a map of Texas out of a stone is intimidating. But looking at a stone and removing those sections and pieces that don't look like Texas one at a time isn't near so.

Trying to figure out how to remove something as large as the Gulf of Mexico from the stone looks impossible. Cutting slots through the Gulf and then removing small pieces is not nearly as big a thing.

When I'm done with it the rock will be valued at over a thousand dollars. If one has the time and has access to a decently equiped rental yard they can do such a project themselves for less than that. Plus they will have some warm fuzzie feelings to enjoy when it's done.

The same thing with the fabrication of the gate. It's series of small things that when all put together make a big thing. I know. I did all those welds. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I could blame it on New Mexico and Oklahoma wanting to have a more intimate relationship.

But the truth is some dumb son of a sorry sheep chasing cowboy went on a long trip with the rock in the back of his 2003 C5500 pickemup.

There was this bump.

Don't ever never carry a rock like that flat on a steel bed over a bump of much size. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Oh well, the worst thing that could happen did. So with that behind me we'll start having fun again.

Here's a success story to make me feel better. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
