I m u s t re s i s t turning the basement here into another workshop

Think of it as a structural improvement and when you need it , it will be there. :)

It would be easy to put it in now and a real pain later on.

I removed the forms and took some measurments. The top of the cut bank wall is bowed in 1 1/4" in the center of it's 36'(it really does not look like that much so I was a little suprised). This just means that the logs will have to hang over that much then gradually back to flush 10' to 12' on either side of the bow. It is well within a workable range so I am ok with it.
I checked the whole thing(top of the wall pour) for square & my 30x36' basement is out by less than 1/2". It was out about a quater inch before all the drama. So I am felling a little better now.

Monday I my trusses & I'll update then. While waiting for the trusses to be built I will lay down a double sill- 2 layers(staggered seams) of 2x12 PT boards and anchor them witht he J bolts. This will give the trusses 3" to sit on and a base to screw the first course of logs into.

I guess it is really time to find my drawings(to scale) that I did 3 years ago, and get the windows and doors ordered...it would be nice to know where to put them and the rough-in sizes

Ok, opinions needed ref what to put between the logs. I have narrowed the field to 3:

-Cheap:188' x 12" Foam Wrap 1/8" Roll - Fast Free Shipping | eBay

-Good:The Tape Depot - TheTapeDepot.com - The One and Only Tape Superstore. We carry Adhesive Tape, ATG Tape, Conspicuity Tape, Copper Tape, Duct Tape, Camo Tape, Carton Sealing Tape, Double Coated Tape, DOT Tape, Electrical Tape, Floor Tape, Foil Tape, Ga

-Best:SCE-41 Neoprene Tape, Black, Single Permanent Adhesive, 1/8" Thick x Custom Width x 50' Roll - SCE-41 Neoprene Tape - H-O Products

After reading a bit, I don't think the closed cell foam packaging roll stuff will hold up to UV or any sealer I may put on the logs.

Next is the cross linked Polyethylene which will work fine, but I am leaning towards the neoprene tape. It is resistant to everything except clorinated based cleaners.

I would run two strips of 1/8" thick x 1/2" wide tape along the top outside edges of each log which will leave dead air space between the tape. Pricewise the neoprene and the poly are in the same ballpark.

Yes I researched the "Log Home" products designed for this application. Caulking seems to be the number one choice which I am not too crazy about.

I think the neoprene tape is good. Is 1/8" thick enough is the question that comes to mind? Your logs are going to have to be dead square and not settle any for there not to be gaps using tape that thin.

I'm glad to see you got a handle on the foundation (I like happy endings).
I would go with some log home weather stripping tape, it's about a 1/2" square, I don't think 1/8" will be thick enough in the long run.
Do your logs have any means of holding them straight? Like a spline or tongue and groove? If you don't have a spline I would suggest routing one in and using some 1/4" or 3/8" plywood rips as the spline. You will thank me later when the wind can't blow right through.

Dave I am going to use 10" log screws every 2-3'. I know the spline method is common, but I have to wonder if it is needed with screws that pull the logs together?
My last log house was 10" spikes and yes I would agree a spline would be helpfull. I only lived in that house for 3 years and I never had a gap. Back then('83) I used 1x6" fibergalss roll for the between log insulation. I have had a buddie try and contact the current owners, but so far no luck. The house is still standing, but that really tells me nothing.

I'm going to use Sill Seal when I put up my logs. Not positive if I will go for the fiberglass or the foam, but Sill Seal it will be. I believe it comes in rolls of 50 or 100 ft and is about 6 inches wide.

Bo, I was in Home Desperate picking up the 2x12x16 PT for the double sill. They have the Owens Corning FoamSealR(comes in 50 and 82' rolls) sill sealer. I think you are right, the ribs will be benificial and the price is doable. I am going to hunt around for the best price and get it ordered.

Um.....yes Dave, I have come to that conclusion....the hard way. Remember, ignorance is bliss until it causes something like this:thumbsup:.

M7, these are just some of the reasons I'm going with piers for my cabin.
Glad you got it worked out before putting some logs on!
