I hooked everything up and welded the plate to the end sitting on the I beam "post" first since it was the most precarious:

Don't bust too hard on my welds.....I have yet to figure out how do burn a decent weld while vertical or upside down. I have tried pushing the puddle up and down both with crappy results. I have just given up on running a bead and do it is short bursts going up, then moving 1/8-1/4" & hitting it again. I know my welds are holding because I smack them with a 14 lb maul with no effect.

There are attachment plates on both sides of the beam..all done:

Next was the retainer wall side, so I made two brackets and attached them to the rebar that is embedded in the concrete:

Welded up:

All welding done, and no chance of any 2,000lb beam crashing down anymore. I also will lag bolt down the I beam with 3" lags into the sole plate:

Then, before it got dark at what seems like noon, I had to get a string up and the first two 2x10x10 deck frame boards up:

It was a good day, everything worked and no blood, just some slag down the sleeve a few times:)

Good job getting the beam in place by yourself. From a distance it appears that the welds are not hot enough. That may explain your problems with the vertical position.

That is possible, but I had the Millermatic turned all the way up...probably should have preheated it. I don't think it was a Miller issue, but generator issue. 25KW should be able to keep up with the welder, but I notice much better welds on house current.

Are you running shield gas outside? If there is any and I mean any wind it will affect the quality of the weld adversely. Fluxcore wire is made for outside work. Weld prep is key. Flapwheel and sidegrinders are a must. Preheat on that large a heat sink in cold weather would have helped too.

Im sure what you've done is fine. Keep clicking along. Its looking great.

Yep Argon mix, no wind. They ain't trailer hitch quality welds but yes I think they will do.

Progress today....60 degrees and the rain held off:

I decided to attach right to the logs with joist hangers instead of a header. I think the exposed header would trap moisture, so the first joist is 4" off the log wall:

And we now have another new calf, born around dawn this morning:thumbsup::

Rick,
How are you going to surround the vertical beam/post.:confused2: You might have already mentioned this, but I slept since then.;) Will you rock it?
hugs, Brandi

Oooouuu, I didn't think about rock.....hmmmm, that gives me something to think about.

We talked about leaving it exposed...going for the popular "the entrance to the mine" look. Either way it's on the back burned for a while or two.

You could face it with cedar to match the wall logs. I like the mine entrance look myself. It looks industrial.:)
