Rick, how long is that beam? Im surprised it made the left hand turn up the hill. Did you have any trouble with that.?

I can't believe the weather this winter. Its like early spring. I will be up the first of the week...I've got a door, another window and more siding to install.

Rick,

It was great to meet up with you and see the new house! It is going to be awesome! I'm sure the long hard effort to get it this far will be well appreciated, especially when that final item is finished and you move in!

Thanks for putting up with me and my small project needs. We enjoyed the trip over and really love the secluded valley! Very nice!

On the way back to Kentucky, we went up to the Pinnacle at Cumberland Gap to take photos of the sunset. We had the mountain to ourselves. It was pretty cold up there, thus the absence of visitors!

Sort of late, but we wish and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in 2012!

Andy

Just read your thread, great project. I will be interested to know how the bark comes off the tulip poplar log you used to support your loft. I cut my tie beams in the summer and the bark came off easy and clean, leaving a nice smooth finish. I cut my faux rafters and joist in the winter and they were a bear to peel. We used scrapers that left tool marks in the wood and a fuzzy finish. Summer cut is much better.

I have a concern with the header over that French door.

It looks to be 4 logs deep which would make it 24 in. That is plenty for that opening but the problem is that you have 4 stacked headers that don稚 work together. When the load bends the top log, it slides along the next lower log etc. so that they don稚 help each other much. The screws aren稚 thick enough to resist the movement and will shear off if the soft cedar wood fibers don稚 crush. It looks like a simple fix at this point. Drill 4 or 5 vertical through holes and clamp the whole thing together with ス in all-thread. The end washers and nuts can be recessed if they are in the way. It would help to have glue between the logs but a bit late for that.

The other concern I have is that cantilevered deck. Sorry, but that is always a bad idea. There is no way to permanently prevent water from following the cantilevered beams back into the house. A roof over the deck will certainly help, but you will always have to keep after the caulk around those beams where they enter the wall.

Good to see you have it closed in for the winter. I wish you many happy years in this great house.

Mike, it's 32' & made the turns easy.

Andy, glad you could stop by and let me know how those .22's run when you get a chance to shoot them.

Fox, yes I should have cut those Poplars back in the summer. These were late fall and they refuse to peel so I left the bark on for now. I think once the stove is in and I heat things up the logs will shrink & that bark will drop off. If not the wife really like the rustic look, so I might just end up spraying Tung Oil on them.
As for the cantilever, it will have a 10' roof over it with 4' of overhang on the ends & 2' off the back. Your right, there will be times when the North wind blows water onto the deck so I will just have to deal with it. Even with no roof yet I am only getting a small amount of water in the basement from a couple of the the beam slots which are no yet caulked. Do to the sequence of construction(translates to the sequence of the money trail:D) I had to do it that way because I had to have the deck in place to work on the roof.
You peeled tie poles look awesome!

I put the auger on and hauled the 13' I beam up to the house.

Drilled a hole:

Hooked a strap to the beam so it would not slide off the forks & raised it:

Well the weather broke after a little snow and the ground froze solid(which is a good thing) so I got the 32'x12"x1/4" I-beam up. I know the "Safety Police" are going to go into de-fib, but I used the FEL to lift the entire beam up....hey when working alone sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

I needed about 3.5" on each end to get the height I needed and decent attachment point:

The Kioti would now lift the entire thing...it wouldn't when it was 44' long"

I needed to roll it and could not do it by hand so I stuck a 4x6 under it and lowered the FEL which turned the beam upright:
