No kidding. Can't get anything done. Rains every other day here in Mid. Tn. I started a 16x20 deck yesterday. Thinking now I should have used Gopher wood.

Well Shane, if you decide to make it from gopher wood, I know where a specific set of plans for a big boat are, and they're free, no copyright to deal with.:thumbsup:.

Good Grief....We finally got the money together to order the gable glass, so I took the quote and measurements back to the place yesterday. They now tell me that their distributor cannot make custom glass that is 11'x5'...too big. The local company even pointed it out that they had already said they could do it, but the distributor said it was a mistake.

{sigh}

Sooooo, I have to reconfigure the opening into 4 panes of glass instead of two, so back to the drawing board. My wife helped and actually came up with this:

There is just no way around making it "busy", but her design is growing on me. I drew 5-6 designs that looked way worse(drunken spider webs). Tomorrow I am going to cut the two 7' braces and put them up there, then stand back and see if it still looks ok. In the long run, installing 4 - 200+lb panes of glass will be much safer than two 450lb one's.

I did talk to a commercial glass place in N.C, since I know I have seen glass that big in buildings. The guy said, yes it can be done, to the tune of about $5,000 a piece:shocked: They would have to have steel frames and the install would require a crane. At least my curiosity has been satisfied :thumbsup:

Sometimes it's better to do nothing and wait until the right idea hits you then to move forward just to move forward. This is something that you will live with for a very long time and getting it right is what is what matters the most.

Have you considered removing what is already there and playing around with the entire opening?

What about two big square windows from the box store and then having some custom made, smaller, triangle windows to fit the remaining openings?

Does the window have to end at the center post or can it go on the outside of it?

Eddie

I like Eddies Idea...don't you think you would want to be able to open some windows upstairs for ventilation...? Won't it get awfully hot up there without some circulation...? If you got some nice big windows from the big box store and then added whatever side lights you wanted it might be worth considering...Just a thought .

Yeah Eddie I have kicked around all those ideas. I/we kinda like how it's morphing, center support, Crow's feet and all. I don't need windows that open on this end, I have one in the other gable and I am probably going to put in a solar gable fan in that end too.

IPlay, I am a Chevy guy...but that window sure will make my neighbor happy;)

Brin, I want the look of framless custom windows. I have never liked "wall" windows up in a gable...it just doesn't look right.

Like Eddie suggested---why not just step back and think about how this whole thing came about.....You just put the braces in because of the perceived roof weight--I think--That sort of boxed you in from that point forward, and you have reacted to a plan that was not thoroughly thought out....

You might consider finishing the outside siding up to where the braces connect and then put in a couple of rectangular windows.....Just a thought Tony

I am with Eddie on this one. Step back from it for at least a week.
