Porch roof is decked:

I got the insulation and purlins up there this afternoon. Tomorrow I will set the tin, then start spoke-ing the railings.
You seem to be making great progress. Congrats! We have started working on our back porch and deck. I've been adding some framing and blocking for the deck boards. The progress you are making puts me to shame.

Glad you got it covered up. Still amazed at your stamina and fortitude. Attention Deficit Disorder or not. :)

I don't know how I missed checking this thread out until I saw your mention of the building code discussion in Bo's thread. I read it all through the past couple days. Interesting read coming in late in the game and seeing the whole picture including the long delay from start to really getting the logs going. Nice work you've done there!

I went to town today and stopped by the hardwood flooring plant. I took a look at 4/4 sawmill cut kiln dried hard maple. I glad I made the trip, it is just going to be too much work to use. All of the boards are random width, so they would have to be trimmed. And I saw lot's of split boards, so the loss between damage and trimming would be about 20%, and a ton of work/time. Even though I have the saw and planer, I decided to switch to plan "B". I am going to look for flooring that is done, but un-finished. So far I have a price of $2.29 per sq ft...the scrounging begins.........

Good plan on getting milled flooring. I've milled my own and it's a LOT of work. I love the look of "Cabin / tavern grade" hardwood flooring.

Is that the same as 2common grade? if so that is what I have been looking at. I am seeing prices down to .99 a sq ft for red oak, maple & ash are quite a bit higher.

A buck a foot is dirt cheap. I'm not sure if it is called #2 common in other locals. It will have knots, large color variations, checks, wane, cracks, and shorts. It's all good if your looking for that look.

Yep, that describes 2-common. I agree, a dollar is ridiculously low, but I have found it at more than one place. It does make me suspicious though.........

Did my basement floor with that grade (about 1000 sq ft) some years back (.60 /bd ft then). Needed sanding + finish but has stood up extremely well.
Interesting to note that with time most different shades of wood all became the same.
At those prices I simply ordered 20% extra and used the rejects in the fireplace.
Would I do it again? yes! (if my back was younger)

I always figured that the mills simply used down time to find profit from the rejects which suited me just fine as the look was great and sure less expensive than any other floor covering.
When clients saw the 'look' It brought me some 8-10 customers for their cottages as that was what fitted the chalet look.
