The Logging Clean-Up Begins!

Gotta be careful with selective logging too! That kind of logging sometimes leaves all the undesirable trees still standing. Less work for the loggers, and you, but the future productivity of the forest is severly impacted as all the small desireable trees can now not get enough light or nutrients - you end up with big 'trash' trees.

In my case "clear" cutting in certain areas is the way to go for the long haul - /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Seems there is ALWAYS a $%*# trade off!!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Oh you lucky fellow (and dog too).
What must it be like to have flat land without big stones embedded? I will never know.
What do you get (rid of) for the $7500.-?
Looks real good from here.
All the best,
Martin

Such a nice clean pile, such smooth earth, such clean earth. That is almost flat enough to plant seed and go.

The bigger the pile, the hotter, cleaner, and faster the fire will burn.

Good choice hiring out the nasty work.

Here are some photo's to give an idea of the scope of the project.

Thanks for the great photos. I look forward to seeing your progress. I will be starting a similar project pretty soon. I have a logger on my property right now clearing an 8 acre area as well as taking out all of the trees in a 15 feet wide line all along my fenceline (approx. 10,000 feet of fenceline). There are 297 trees to be cut, according to my count. I will then have a dozer come in and clean up his mess, level out the area, and then I will plant grass. The really fun part will be when I get to put up a new fence all the way around the property. I can't wait /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. I'm really looking forward to the finished product, as I'm sure you are too. It may just take time, and a lot of money /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif.

I'm curious - How many stumps like that do you have per acre? )

I estimate between 200-500 stumps per acre.

Lawrence,

If you will have your logger leave a foot or two of stump instead of cutting the tree off at the ground, you can save significantly on your clean-up. You will lose a little revenue from the logging, but it will make up for it by making it easier to pop the stumps up with a little leverage and the clean-up contractor can get done faster, hence cheaper hopefully.

I have learned a lot of expensive lessons with 20/20 hindsight in this logging venture. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Martin,

Well, the first thing I'm getting rid of is the $7,500 /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

More than anything, I'm getting clean burn piles which will burn quickly in October and relatively smooth ground that I can work with my tractor. He is also shaking the dirt and sand out of the existing windrows so they will burn better too.

The contractor is a really nice guy and so far has gone the extra mile, making sure the dirt is shaken from the roots before piling them. He also offered to drag out the hardwood logs so I can cut firewood. Not that we get really cold winters in Central Georgia, but given energy prices and the amount of cash we're hemmoraging right now, every little bit helps.

Here is a bucket load of oak fire wood from the clean-up. One of many to come.
