I don't know much about "registering" dogs but when we bought our Chihuahua the seller said she was a purebred and could be registered. However, the paperwork they gave us is to register her with "America's Pet Registry, Inc."; not AKC. It makes me a little bit curious, although I don't really need to know since we have no intention of breeding her and would have taken her with no papers if we'd found her in an animal shelter. I've noticed also that there are long haired and short haired Chihuahuas and what we were told, as well as what's on the paperwork, is that her sire was long haired and dam was short haired. Reckon someday they'll register medium haired ones? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Freds,
So true.
Also, a year or two after a breed becomes popular, a lot of them show up in shelters. People buy them for "status", then find out they don't like the character of the breed. It happened with Dalmations, and I think it's happening now with Jack Russels.

I'm less than impressed by the AKC and haven't registered any of our goldens. Some of the legislation they support will place a huge burden on responsible breeders while doing nothing to stop puppy mills.

I wish goldens would drop off the top 50 list; popularity brings out the worst in owners.

Too many people buy dogs (puppys) because of the "cuteness" and don't do their homework on the breed, size & energy level of the dog.
When those energetic pups become around a year old these poeple realize they are over their heads in the reponsibility of pet ownership.
Its a sad thing to see these puppy mills in operation selling unhealthy animals to pet stores that resell them at inflated prices to uneducated buyers.
Not to defend AKC, but they do have alot of info on there web site for any one considering purchasing a dog for the first time.
Me and my wife own two dogs and we believe that is is a lifetime commitment.
Food & vet bills can get expensive but accept that for everthing our dogs give back to us.

We have had Boxers for 40 years and I am not happy to see them as popular as they show for reason already mentioned. So far their temperment has remained fairly laid back. They are not generally aggressive but they will stand their ground. Over the years I have seen ours forced to take on the more aggressive breeds and have always come out on top.

One idiot sicced his doberman on my wife and our then alpha male Boxer while see was riding her bycycle in the park. That was a mistake on his part, his doberman ended up in the vets and he wanted me to pay the bill. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Fat chance.

PineRidge,

Howdy! From one Shih Tzu owner to another.

We have 2 as well. Kit and Caboodle. We went to pick out a puppy about 4 years ago from a breeder we found advertising in the paper. I know now. Big mistake. They were breeders who had no business being in the business. Anyway, they had 2 Shih Tzu puppies left (they bred other breeds as well). We told the kids to select one. Well they couldn't agree (imagine that) and I just wanted to get out of that place so I caved in and bought them both. I considered it a rescue mission to get the dogs away from that place as well. It was a great decision. These dogs are the best of friends (they have the same father but different moms - born 2 days apart). And, so far, they have remained healthy with no evidence of genetic problems. As different as night and day in size and personality so they complement each other well. Kit is a fat slug who loves to cuddle. Caboodle is skinny as can be and acts like she just chugged 4 cups of Starbucks. 5 minutes of lap time is about all she can stand. Good dogs.

I agree. Seems like some charges should have been filed, if the guy did in fact send his dog with intent.

Bmac the wife and I really enjoy our Shih Tzus as well. They seem to be about the best tempered dogs that we have come across. Ours like to run laps in the great room which is always good for a laugh when one gets tangled up in a lamp cord while horsing around. Did I say that we've replaced more than one lamp in that particular area of the house? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have had Labs all my life. My last Lab died at 16 years of age and my wife and son decided we needed a house dog.

So we bought a Jack Russel. We saw no need to register him.

I will have to say that if I ever get another dog it will have to be a Jack Russel. This is one one the smartest, fun, and personable dogs I have ever seen. Yes I know some can be a terror but I think a lot of that has to do with the amount of attention the owner gives the dog. He is very excited when we come home but after about 5 minutes he is just like any other dog. He knows about 15 tricks, everything from playing dead to counting to three.

My wife has him hooked on doggie ice cream, she has her on recipe. He gets half a cup a night. And come 6:00pm he starts the stare-down, if that doesn't work and your reading the paper he will push the paper to the side, hang his head over the top, come under, or just lay down on the paper while you are holding it. If I am watching the TV and its ice cream time he will stand on my chest. If I don't pay him any attention he will take his paw and gently touch the side of my head to get my attention.
