Re: The New Jeep \"Rescue\" SUV. Check it out...

It is not so much the truck as it is the add-on equipment.

My Dodge 4x4 Cummins would do well against one of the old Power Wagons(which, by all means, were pretty awesome). We have 4x4, plenty of power, plenty of room in the box.

The issue comes more from add-ons. A winch is easy and done all the time. The manual trucks can add a pto to the tranny easily, but don't know about the autos. It would be simple to put a pto shaft to the back of a pickup. A hydraulic source is easy to add; look at the hydrualic winches that work off power steering pumps. A lot of this type thing is done on flatbed dumps and such.

The actual 3pt contraption is the biggest deal.

The uniqueness to me is the simplicity in design,it came with the attatchments already in place and it was built specifically with farming in mind and ready to farm with.
You have a lot more things on your truck than a Power Wagon and lot more chance for something to go wrong.
These trucks did not have chrome/carpet/cloth seats either, which to me would be better for basic farm use. Not to mention the simplicity to work on.If you got a lot of mud in it,take a water hose and spray it out.

There are a lot of things you could do to a truck if you wanted to and was mechanically inclined/had the time and liked playing around/tinkering etc,but thats beside the point.

I still like the tiny, cramped little CJ' too. Simple as can be. Kinda like my Farmall-A.

You're right, there is an appeal to that simplicity and ease of use, maint, ect.

Those old Dodge Power wagons this day an age it would be hard for me to imagine having one on the highway, everyone blowing by you at 80 mph. If I had one it would probably never see a hard road, because it is geared so low etc.

Re: The New Jeep \"Rescue\" SUV. Check it out...

The old Jeeps I grew up in ran 4.88's and 5.38's. With the old flathead-4, we never got anywhere fast...

Even now, the second-out engine at the Fire station I used to volunteer at, is at redline at 55mph('89 Ford 8000 seris with Cat-3208).

An old friend of mine use to have an old Jeep he ran on the mail route,if you took that thing over 40 MPH it souded like it was going to come apart.

Re: The New Jeep \"Rescue\" SUV. Check it out...

Oh ya! He probably had 5.38's. Add to that the typically short tires of the genra(before lift kits, big rims and tires ect) and you have a real screamer on you hands!

I remember with 4.88's we could go down the road ok, but going over the speed limit was never a problem on the highway. When we went wheelin, we took back roads where we never saw 65mph speed limits(late 60's till 73 when we got a newer CJ5). I think we took back roads also, because my Dad's buddy had a CJ2A with 5.38's. He certianly could not keep the pace we could with those 4.88's.

I was just a boy back in the 1960's when he had the Jeep.It was a lot of fun for me to drive on his farm.

I'm sure it's been discussed, but the current Hummer isn't anything at all like it's original, military brother.

This is true if your talking about an H2. The H2 has basically the same running gear as a Suburban with a body similar to the original Hummer. It's a total poser, all show and no go.
The H1 is very similar to the military Humvee, with front and rear IFS, geared hubs and a Torsen center differential. It has an upgraded interior but otherwise is very similar to the military Humvee.
