The Objective Superiority of JD in 32-46 HP

Well said Todd and sorry for misinterpreting your post!! You are absolutely right about BRAKES!! One of the scariest things in the world is to be going down a 10k grade and lose brakes. Not a pleasant ordeal.

When I first went looking for a compact I thought I was going to buy Kubota. I just wanted a smaller tractor to fill in where the Massey was too big to get the job done. I had a friend that had Kubota and he told me how cheap they were and how good of tractors they were. When I got down to the hp/price/performance issue I could buy JD cheaper than Kubota. If it had been the other way around I would have bought the Kubota.

Todd,

I wouldnt argue for either. In that price/performance range, I bought a 2910--the objectively correct choice./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

There are finally apples-to-apples data on green/orange loader lift capacities.

To recall, we had JD measurements of lift at pivot pin, lift at bucket edge, and breakout force at pivot pin. We had Kubota lift and breakout measured at unknown locations. I just got a Kubota brochure that lists data for the new Kubota "2" loaders. It lists lift at bucket center, lift at 500mm forward (of what???), lift at pivot pin, and breakout force at 500mm forward.

So, you can see from the boldface above, we finally have one measurement that is the same: lift capacity at pivot pin. Here they are in lbs:

JD 410 (for 4100): .............882
JD 420 (for 4200: .............1195
JD 430 (for 4300-4400): ....1258
JD 460 (for 4500-4700): ....2325

LA482 (for 3010-3410): .....1224
LA682 (for 3710-4310): .....1786
LA852 (for 4610): .............2470

Interesting thread. Wish I would have picked up on this one sooner, but...................old age, work, something else.

Anyway, this is a great discussion for the folks who have the wherewithall to be able to spec out a new tractor and afford it, too. Then there are the folks, and there are many of us, who have purchased used compacts for any variety of reasons, that have to make decisions based on another whole set of criteria. Generally, what's available out in the market and at what price.

I don't have any firm criteria to make a used compact tractor purchase. I know that when I bought my B7100 (1/2 the hp of the tractors being discussed here, but same thoughts apply), it took a couple of months to even find a compact in the size range and price range I wanted. To be honest, I would have bought Orange, Blue, or Green if it was the right compact at the right price. I compromised on the B7100......wanted more hp, didn't want to spend more $$.......so the nitty gritty specs weren't particularly important. Still had lot's of work to do and the B7100 could do it.

My real thought in all of this.......if you're buying a new tractor and can afford what you want, the detailed specs may be important. If you're buying a used compact tractor, you kind of have to accept what's available and be ready to compromise, or be in the right spot a the right time (I call that the Von phenomenon).
