As a dedicated mowing machine, it's hard to beat a zero-turn mower with turf tires.
Now much lawn do you have to mow?

I'm with Roy on that. Get a dedicated riding lawnmower.

So I think I want the wrong thing, but for all the right reasons. I have a modern tractor for duty use, but when I use it for mowing, it leaves ruts in the yard (I have very sandy soil). I think I want a lightweight tractor (as a second machine, not a replacement), probably with turf tires, to be a dedicated mowing machine, probably with a flail mower. Preference to an older and less-expensive machine. It'll only be for mowing (my Mahindra 3316 will continue to serve as a loader/plowing/brushhogging machine), so I don't need serious capability or traction. I just want something that won't tear up the lawn; bonus points for something that's simple, and that I can resell someday for as much as I have in it.

Thoughts?

You need a late 30's Allis Chalmers B w/ mower deck. That's a lawn tractor that is just dripping with coolness...

At least I know that's what I want.

or a ih cub, or a MH pony, or an allis G, or a farmall a-b-c-140 etc.. all good ides for cool old mowing machines.

if you get one with a trike front end.. you will have discovered the original 'zero turn mower'

my farmall C trike can easilly turn around with one wheel rotating on the ground, without haveing it brake-locked and chewing up grass...

Old stuff is neat, but do you really want to mow 2.5 acres with it? Something like a Kubota BX is a small tractor and fairly light, but the way you describe your mowing, it would be really tough to beat a zero turn.

Considering what the OP has stated, my vote goes to the Farmall Cub.

Nostalgic, lightweight, useful, practical, good looking, and easy to work on and obtain parts.

I know where there is a Cub Lowboy. I think the price is kinda steep at 2650(which is what I was quoted), but the tractor is in great shape...........just dirty. Battery box looks almost like new.
