Meters only give you an idea of what it is, regardless of the fact that digital ones go down to 1/10 of a percent. The only accurate way to check MC, especially while in the process of drying, is the oven dry method. Once lumber has reached an equilibrium, electronic meters generally do "ok", but we have quality meters ($300-$500) and can get 5 different readings on the same piece with three meters...

The one year per inch is repeated over and over, it just isn't true in most cases, but you can believe what ever you want... lol (for softwood)

Like I said, for Pine, probably not. But I have had many people bring AD 1" (eastern white) pine that's been drying for a year and it's almost never under 15%.

FYI, regarding SPF, I have never seen pine or fir around here, it's always Spruce.

Lumber sit's outside here, OR buildings that are in the open air, and pretty much everyplace but desert area's, lumber will end up at 20% if left long enough... I've got lumber here of all ages up to 20 years old, checking them proves what I said...

Like I said, locale can make a difference. In NE USA EMC is around 12%.

I've been doing this a long time, so I'm not spewing out what "I read" some place, it's what I've experienced for myself...

Not sure if you're suggesting that I'm "spewing out" what I read somewhere, but I've been in the lumber business (i.e. that's what makes my bacon) for 35 years.

I've built my own home, many barns/sheds here, a lot of cabinets (for other folks) and lot of moldings/trim/etc....adding value to the lumber BECAUSE I had a good source of cheap lumber. My best guess is that mill has made me $250-300,000....and that much again if I every sell my place.

Good for you. Many people have no real idea what to do with a home bandmill. Sounds like you have it really figured out.
