Or horse trading as we more commonly call it, another post reminded me of a friends experience.
We pay a goods and services tax on most things of 10% but most tradesmen will do a better deal for cash or a trade with no paperwork involved, a friend of mine is a trade teacher and bought some new carpet at a garage sale which was good quality and cheap, he called a carpet layer for a quote and the usual pleasantries took place and in short a deal; was struck were the carpet was layed and his van was serviced and tuned with no cash or paperwork.
The carpet was laid and a date set for the service, the van arrived and my friend went about an oil and filter change then did the tune up, all was well and he took it for a test run.
He lives a few miles out of town on a dirt road and he took off out of his drive onto the road, van performed well but he decided on about a 5 mile run just to make sure, he approached a T intersection travelling at about 50mph and applied the brakes only to be greeted by his foot going straight to the floor, the usual expletives let loose and the pedal pumped three times and he had brakes.
He then nervously drove home much slower, put the van up on the hoist and bled the brakes and changed the fluid.
Later that day the owner came around to pick up the van, it was explained that the service went well with new filters, oil, plugs etc then the owner volunteered 'I should have told you about the brakes, you have to hit them three times before they work', at the conclusion of this sentence he laughed and jumped in his van and took off down the road, my friend went out and watched him as he approached the T intersection at speed, he saw the brake lights come on and the almost stand on its nose, at this point he went back inside chuckling uncontrollably.

Great story! I got a real chuckle out of that myself!

I did an antenna install for a horse trainer, they are notorious for not paying their bills.
He wanted three outlets so I ran the coax to the three rooms and connected them to the splitter in the roof, then installed the antenna and connected it to my spectrum analyser and set it perfectly.
Told him it was done aand he came back with 'I don't have any cash on me, I'll fix you up next week' which translates to good luck with getting paid.
It was the evening of the football grand final and he went inside to check the TV, it didn't work and he was quite vocal in letting me know this, I told him when I got paid I would have it working within 2 minutes.
He suddenly remembered where he had some cash and I connected the antenna to the splitter.

I've heard old masons would do a similar trick. They'd put a pane of glass into the bricks inside a chimney part way down. If they didn't get paid, the house would fill with smoke when the owners tried to build a fire the first time. Looking up you saw daylight, so WTF is going on? Calls to the mason in irate tones would get a "it'll work once you pay" reply. Once you paid, he would get on the roof and drop a brick down the chimney, breaking the pane of glass out and clearing the chimney. Not sure if it was real or not, but it sure is funny to think so!

I had an old guy till a garden for me years ago. He was quite a character, so when I stopped off to pay him he started telling stories.
He tilled a garden for someone, and waited patiently to get paid. When no money was forthcoming by July 4, he went and tilled the guy's crops under.
When the garden owner called all irate, asking what he did that for the old gent replied "Since you didn't pay me I thought that you weren't satisfied, so I went back and did it again!"
I'm not sure if it really did happen that way or not, but it sure made a good story.

Horse people not paying their bills? Who would have thought? My Dad warned me about that.

I do it with friends all the time and it works because no one cares if they are up or down, even if in the thousands! Those are good friends. My Dad, if I get him some eggs, I don't even want the money yet he INSISTS on paying every last cent. I don't get it.

Last time I bartered I did a clutch job on a Volvo for a guy. I furnished all the parts and labor and did a proper job. In exchange he was going to dig out a small 8 car section in my parking lot and fill it with washout. (will never use washout again) I assumed he had the equipment and everything to do it with. He had a tractor delivered and a date was set and he didn't show. He didn't answer his phone or anything so I called someone that could deliver the fill and did the work myself. Monday a guy showed up and picked up the tractor. I told him I hadn't had time to clean the machine up and he said don't worry about it. Later the guy I had the deal with shows up and said his wife wanted him to go berry picking so he did that instead of meeting his obligation with me. Then he asked if I was going to pay for the hours used on the tractor. I told him he hadn't fulfilled his obligation to me and never mentioned anything about tractor rental. I also told him he owed me for the washout and delivery charge and he said he didn't have the money. I told him never return to my shop and put the word out on him to people I knew. Pretty sure he stiffed the tractor owner as well. I think it was a loan from another acquaintance.

Not funny like the OP's story but it's always good to vent. ;)

I have known people like that. They have these partially completed deals all over the place. There was a great MASH episode about that. A string of deals that all fell apart in the end.
