He was quite athletic, but did not regain that athleticism after he was shot. Since he was Polish, he was quite popular around here and Chicago, with their large Polish communities.

It may have been the biggest day ever for St. Louis. What an event. A Pope in our city!

On this day in 1966, Battista Farina, Italian automobile designer and founder of Pininfarina company, dies at 72. Even as a kid I remember reading about his death and the cars he designed. I read every car magazine I could find back then. Completely exotic to a kid on a farm in Illinois.

when i grew up Chicago had the 2nd largest polish speaking population.....in the world. I remember the bill boards in polish.

On this day in 1968 Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated in Memphis TN. Arguably the most influential civil rights leader in modern times. I remember seeing the news of but didn't really understand who he was until a few years later.

On this day in 1976 Howard Hughes passed away at the age of 72 after several years of living a reclusive lifestyle. Actor, aviator and larger than life person in his day.
On this day in 1992 Sam Walton passed away. He left an indelible mark on retail sales throughout the world.
On this day in 2008 Charlton Heston Passed away. One of his most famous roles was as Moses in the Ten Commandments. That was one of the first movies that I remember seeing in a movie theater.
