Don't trip or slip while operating this roller.

Stories involving Tannerite, huh?? Two years ago, in July, the only wildfire to ever come thru this area was started by to two idiots shooting tannerite targets.

Fortunately, no structures were burned - just a lot of grassland, pine forrest and first cut hay. A lot of taxpayer money was spent and the two idiots were caught but will never be able to pay the bill for the containment. The fire was stopped by several local farmers and their large equipment. All the available fire fighting equipment was already committed to other fires.

Watermelon Hill wildfire - 13,000+ acres burned.

I think the safety police all quit their jobs after they saw this guy splitting wood with his homemade log splitter. I know the screw drive splitters are not very popular (and for good reason), but this guy takes the risk to a new level, imo. He has it situated about 2ft off the ground, and so he's literally standing over it while pushing the rounds into the screw. Plus, there is no cover on the rotating PTO shaft. I just see a trip to the ER in his future, if not the morgue. If nothing else, working at that height would kill my back in about 5 minutes! Your thoughts?

ONE moment of inattention away from disaster.

The concept is great, but the 'what ifs' outnumber the set-up that's been videoed.

At least the screw drive splitter is stationary and the operator is away from the PTO. I'm not sure it's a lot more dangerous than using an unguarded table saw (which I do all the time.)

The splitters that scare me are the big rotating wheel ones and the modified hay balers.

Yeah I'd probably be dead just from lifting all the wood. You're not gonna get away with that trying to split fresh cut 25"+ diameter oak rounds, even my little short 14" long ones. That stuff is heavy. Well maybe a dozen or so then you'd be done. I thought machines were supposed to be labor saving.

When he shows it splitting some apple, I will be impressed.
He would be well advised to cover the driveshaft and make himself a U shaped bar (like the ones that go around the chute on a power feed chipper) that will shut the tractor off when pushed.

"Have you ever seen a meat saw? Talk about DANGEROUS!"

Yes, I have seen more than one butcher missing a finger or two.

Because they weren't wearing these: Chain Mail Glove | eBay

I just bought Kevlar gloves and arm sleeves for splitting wood, and while the material protection factor isn't to the level of these (or proof against a butcher's band saw), they have saved me from the usual digs, scrapes, slivers, and assorted minor skin injuries that I usually end up with otherwise.

Look on the bright side, he should be eligible for this years Darwin awards. Three pounds in a big metal object with lots of shrapnel potential and he was 43 feet away. Why not 3 feet? At least no innocent persons were hurt. :confused3:

What amazed me (aside from the whole stupid thing) was that he came out from behind the tree, which while not huge, would have been a lot tougher for the metal to tear through than his leg.
