/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gifThat one might get you in trouble..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I havent seen that name in a while and though everyone using it might have been removed... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think I'll plea the 5th on the oil though.....Have fun guys...

John:

I respectively disagree with you. If you have a septic system, one ply is the way to go. City plumbing, well, you could use cardboard if you want to.....just so long as it goes down. On the subject of going down, Amy had 2 powerflushers installed in the house, they will handle a whole roll...on the tube. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I always get off the stool before flushing now, it might try to flush me too if it could. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Time for you to cut wood and me to cut some stainless steel.

Hey Daryl,
How you been doing? I see now your telling John to do the wood cutting instead of yourself. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif And, you've got some SS to cut...now what are you making? Tool steel like 420SS or 17-4, or 300 series? What?

Ha guys,

You got to take another approach to this oil thing. Next time you need to change oil just go over to your neighbors barn and get his used oil set'in round the floor and us it. This oil has already been conditioned for cold starts ,high temps, lugging, idling, high rpm's, dust , sulfur and carbon content. (note-if you need an oil with more idling content check your local county maintanance barn,ie-rescue, fire truck and cop car oil will better have this additive, I think for long periods of just sitting drink'in a cold one on the ol tractor this oil will service you better!)These oils listed above have lost anything most of you thought they needed and anything you didn't want is already in it, so you don't have to worry now, plus it's free!! If you have a worn engine check around for a friend who may have changed out some gear oil next time you go on a beer run. Heck- you may find some of the tools you loaned him in the oil catch pan while your there.(another note- you fella's in cold country check your buds for his used hydro oil ,they help in those below 32 starts.)This is very enviromentaly friendly for you tree huggers too, it will help keep this oil from being dumped in the drainage ditch behind your friends barn, plus you save big time over the high cost of synthetics and still get all the additives and protection.(note-again, if your still worried about detergent , add 1 oz. per engine horse power of Tide at each change, this will cost but a clean motor is important. * a note within a note-check with one of the oil experts on this site to see if this rate is correct) Being your are going to have less worries about oil performance and costly changes now, lets take care of that filter now. You know just a few companies make all those filters, they been trick'in you guys along time cause they know there going to glog sooner or later and you got'a buy another one, and another thing where are you really supposed to throw them away at?? The dumpster man says no,they want give you any core charge back at the parts store ,so they just sit up side down in your shop only to make a mess every time you move them.So next filter change take a long screwdriver and ram it down in those holes in top and open it up so it will flow better. Before you put it back on the engine go in the house and get another cold beer, while at the refrig.get some of those extra magnets off the front and put them in the filter. This will catch all those metal shavings so next dip on the ol stick will be as they say -out of site- out of mind. Now when it is time to change oil again it will be pretty well used so don't pass these savings on to no one else, stretch your oil a little more. Just dump it in your fuel tank, us it now for a upper cylinder and injector pump lube. Don't worry about all the extra smoke, now you can get your work done without worry of looking at the exhaust pipe all day to see that first puff of blue from premature engine wear because you used the wrong oil.
Have another beer now and rest easy.
All these oil fueds should stop now let's stop
the what oil is best talk. Just use the above
no non sense approach.

John - Daryl

You guys know as well as I do what one of the most important keys are to good oil performance???? But I don't think most of the people on this post who argue about it do or they would stop beating this ol dog. AIR FILTER MAINTANANCE the life saver of a combustion engine!!!!!

see ya,

IMO Rather presumptuous on your part? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

These forems are an avenue for members to present their opinions and to discuss all sorts of topics...whether it be controversial or not. Thereby giving the poster of the topic an opportunity to evaluate the opinions and take from them what he/she wants.

Just as your post here is suggesting not to discuss this topic any further"</font><font color="blue" class="small">( All these oil fueds should stop now let's stop the what oil is best talk.)</font>
Or your suggestion </font><font color="blue" class="small">( Just use the above no non sense approach.)</font> is something to consider, but not madatory for the rest of us. If we all were to know what is REALLY best there would be no reason for the discussion board.

Gotta chime in here.

I have a great fondness for humor, and use it often to keep things on the "light" side, especially in situations where passions and emotions can and do enter into an issue or discussion. However, life is often a balancing act, and I feel the need to return the "balance" of this thread back to what I would like to think is "reality".

My most recent comments notwithstanding, I still firmly believe that synthetics are superior to conventional oils in every way. I also believe that one of the only "valid" topics for further discussion is cost/benefit analysis related to whether or not the added expense of synthetics is worth it. (At the end of "x" period of time, do I, or do I not, have more money in my pocket because I used one or the other?]

What I find tiresome are the seemingly endless go-rounds of anecdotal evidence that really prove very little. ("My PowerStroke engine went 47,000 hours using peanut oil, blah, blah ....). Good science often requires "control groups", which very few of us have the luxury of studying. I would be amazed if there were a single (scientifically sound) study showing any advantage to using (top-quality) conventional oil over (top-quality) synthetics, cost notwithstanding. Absent such a study, I'll stick by my contention that the only real consideration is cost.

The good news is that cost/benefit analysis alone might well provide ample opportunity for passionate debate. That reminds me of a bit of anecdotal evidence I'd like to provide, with the caveat that it is exactly that. I just bumped into my friend Joe a few days ago. Joe is a Merchant Marine Chief Engineer with 20 years under his belt, and is currently the head mechanic at a very large local construction firm (after a long stretch as head mechanic at ANOTHER large local construction firm).

"What's up Joey?", says I. "Grr, just ripping the engine out of a D8. Those idiots started it up when it was 5 below out and spun a bearing. It's gonna cost about 25 grand to fix the **** thing". "What kind of oil do you use in it?", I asked him. "Rotella", he says. "Synthetic?". "Nahh, regular - they don't use synthetic, they think it costs too much".

"Joey", I said. "How much synthetic oil will $25,000 buy?". "I know, I know - I gotta stop working for idiots, it drives me crazy".

****

Lastly - the point about maintaining air filters is a very good one. That said, I would stop short of calling it "THE life saver of a combustion engine". Just one of many.

Engine life-savers reminds me of a thread on pre-lubers that I just read. Now there's a nice debate that we could have. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif What DO you guys think of pre-lubers? They sure do make a lot of sense to me, particularly since in addition to pre-lubing, they can also be run AFTER the engine is shut down to help cool it (and turbos), and they will also help maintain oil pressure under a variety of conditions where ordinarily it would have been temporarily lost.
