Heavier barrels are better if you can deal with the weight. A heavy barrel varmint gun and a Harris bi-pod is a hard combination to beat.

Foxes and coyotes do have some fur value. I would think a .243 would blow a hole on the opposite side of either. Devaluing the fur. I have used both .222 and .223 on fox and with the right bullet there is no exit hole. That's with a Nosler Ballistic Tip.

In my direct experience, this is a very good choice. I use a Remington 700 BDL bolt action in .223 with the heavy barrel for your purpose. No problem putting 5 practice rounds into a dime at 100 yards. Get a good scope, not a cheap one and the bipod. It's all about final value and results. Would you put cheap tires on a sports car ??

I also have a Min-14 and a Mini-30. No way to make them accurate enough. A few friends have the 22-250 version of the 700, but now both need TWO hearing aids to function as normal people. When I see a varmint, I only select one round and kiss the bullet and the target goodbye. My dog sees my 700 coming online and starts her alert.

Because of surrounding homes and roads, I use the Nosler fragmenting bullets. BTW: If you have any residual Tyrannosaurus Rex problems in your area, I recommend a Barrett .50 BMG Bolt action for the most fun. Its not for off-hand shooting, though. You can be the first person on your block to be the last person on your block with this device. Ammo from Cabelas, Your Honor. The muzzle brake blast is plenty strong enough to knock down nearby unsuspecting yet deserving bystanders.

A bolt action, no matter who makes them, is the most accurate. The accuracy records are owned by the bolt actions.

Most scientists think the T-Rex went extinct due to an asteroid but now we know the truth! :rotfl:

I knew I posted in the right place....Lot's of good info in only 8 hours! Not even...

I really don't care for the tactical look of some of the rifles. Also, I don't want semi auto, I like bolt action. Even the "ranch rifle" looks a little too "tactical" for my tastes, even in hardwood.

I looked on Bud's Guns. I found a few different versions of the Mossberg recommended. One has a pistol grip, and the other has a more traditional grip. Is there any plus/minus to the pistol grip?

I like a traditional looking rifle, but if there are a lot of advantages to the pistol grip I'd consider it. I imagine it's just personal preference.

Any opinions on these? I'm leaning towards the first link posted.

Piston, a lot of these things are just personal preferences, I think the caliber choice you have heard the most recommended is a good choice. If you prefer traditional bolt guns, there are many good ones to choose from.

Fox and coyote's. 22-250

+1. I love the 22-250 for coyote. The .22lr is a bit light...you don't get the clean kill. The 223 is a solid choice...no argument here. The .243 is a nice choice as well, but may be a bit more than you need, as has been pointed out. If you only have one rifle for coyote duty and deer hunting, though, the .243 is a nice all-around multi-purpose caliber. But who wants just one? 22lr for skunk, rabbit, and squirrels; 22-250 for coyote/fox; and a 270 for deer. My personal preferences. DYODD and YMMV.
