Automation was on its way long before this pandemic. When I started at my last job 30+ years ago, there were over 500 employees. 30 years later there were 65 employees putting out the same product. ANYTHING a human can do with their hands can be automated. The question is if it's worth the money to eliminate that function with automation VS the person. Also, any process a person can do on a keyboard can be captured and automated to within 90% accuracy pretty quickly. Then you just have to deal with the logic to deal with the variables.

There's a lot more to it than just automation...but this pandemic will end up being a motivator...

As for the logic and "X"...therein lies the wonderment of AI...

I was given one to wear at the Doctor's office today that looked just like those. Probably the same ones....

Well, I’ve been around a while and I’ve never understood how automation is so great for the masses. Good for the manufacturers maybe and supposed to make it cheaper for consumers but I don’t believe that last. Then what....manufacturers said “wow, saving money for us is good, so let us save even more by sending jobs to other countries” but I guess the big question was “how can the people we get rid of afford to buy our product”. So automation and A I keeps getting rid of more people and only minimum pay jobs left. And as I said in earlier post college students graduate expecting the stars and don’t want to milk cows or pick veggies if in the country or pickup garbage if in city. I just can’t wrap my head around it. Now I quit cause it’s 1030p and stepdaughter wants to watch Biggest Loser on Roku.

Nobody said automation was great for the masses. It's great for business. One of a business's greatest expenses is humans. You want as few humans in the manufacturing process as possible. And, as mentioned, humans cause manufacturing defects. You want a product that is consistent. People aren't. Machines are.

Agreed. Denny also made very good points the the automation supporters cannot deny.Secondly, automation rarely makes a product cheaper for the consumer. It simply elevates the profit margin.

I'm not convinced we are even close to the point where machines design and build machines. So, there will be jobs above minimum wage for awhile, and that the competition for the better jobs will increase. I also believe that it will further separate the populace into the "haves" and "have nots".

Yep. You sell it for as much as the market will allow.

If you only knew the actual markup on most consumer goods, you'd probably faint....
