If times are hard enough and we stop handing out 'free' money... it will get harvested. I would rather pay more for food and commodities instead of more in taxes.

No it won't. It will rot in the fields while people riot over food shortages in urban areas.

Would you say their employers are shameful too?

There's something going on that attracts those folks here. What could it be?

It's better than where they came from. Same reason my grandparents left Europe in the late 1800s.

Yeah, we'd think we'd figure it out, yet since what, the 60s', few "Americans" will take those jobs. Too hard of work for too little pay/no benefits. So who's gonna harvest it?

Kind of sad isn't it...but predictable. Make "free" money available and people will not work.

So it needs to stop. When there is no free ride people will riot or go to work. Take bus loads of people (especially students) out to work the fields every day. Put up tent cities if needed. Where do the non-Americans live when they work our farms?

The work is "too hard" for Americans but not for others??? Think about that for a while....

If Americans riot because the work is "below them", arrest rioters for civil disobedience. Those who are arrested get one month in the fields without pay...Those who volunteer, get two weeks with pay. I doubt many will leave America for Mexico...but no downside if they do.

Good luck with that.

I have always held that there should be severe economic penalties for those that knowingly hire illegals. I am NOT talking about green card fruit pickers or so called migrant workers, I have no problem with them, but I do have a BIG problem for those that sneak in illegally, and I have even a bigger problem with those that hire them under the table to avoid taxes/workmans comp/etc.

I really see that as the root of the problem, employers who want employees who will work for less than what it would take to get Americans (or legitimate tax-paying immigrants) out in the fields, or into the meat-packing plants, etc. There's clearly a don't ask-don't tell culture between employers and law enforcement on this.

That needs to change. As I said... I don't have respect for anyone breaking the law. An employer knowingly hiring illegal aliens, is guilty and should be held accountable. I don't see why migrant farm workers cannot be legal. Fix the system. Oops.. this is about the upside of the pandemic.

There is some jobs however that Americans flat-out will not do.
Back before the days of the ACA I knew somebody who was running a dairy, they tried to get US citizens to work and milk their cows, they were paying over $3 an hour above minimum wage plus full healthcare benefits (ie: the employer paid for 100% of the employee's very good HMO plan) and they couldn't get people who would show up consistently, on time and not under the influence of something (at least not to the point where would it affect their work).
This was working inside shuffling cows through the milking parlor, attaching the milking machines, feeding the cows with the tractor/feed cart and scraping the alleyways with a skidsteer.
