About a year ago as this new lightweight grapple was being released,(298 entries ago) EA told TBN readers that a root rake grapple for skid steers was just around the corner....I checked their website, but cant find the "Wicked" series for Skid steers. Anybody know what happened??

The corner must be long! It is still going to happen, but i'm not sure exactly when. I'll try to get an update from Ted.

I think the L60's come standard with the SSQA so that is factored in to the lift capacity unlike the L40. If that log I lifted was 1700, then the QA on the loader is 100lbs and the grapple is 450lb I was lifting 2250lbs, not bad for a loader that is rated 2480lbs at the pins not including that the SSQA moves things farther out. That whole tree I picked up in post 280 was way heavier. Since it was hollow up about 5' I can't estimate the weight. I have a couple more logs I am going to cut pieces off of one them till I can pick it up then figure out what the log weighs to see what I can lift. I'm thinking Kubota may be conservative on their numbers.

To keep this thread from going off topic more than it has a I created a new thread about a log I lifted.

Any chance on an update soon? I will be purchasing a 72" grapple soon as the weather has finally begun to improve, and the working season is upon us. Can't wait forever to make a decision....

I know it will not be soon because our factory is already running wide open to keep up with Spring orders.
The Construction Attachments HD Grapples are pretty much bulletproof, so I'd recommend going with one of those if you need something for this Spring.
They also just introduced a HD Root Rake Grapple similar to the Bradco HD Skid Steer Grapple Rake.
Their build time is around 2wks.

Are you sure that you want a rake style grapple? What will be your main use for it?

This is the best style for moving brush.

Agree. Rake style grapples have their uses but the open bottom style has many advantages for general purposes including brush.

For my all around use, I much prefer the rake style. I have owned 2 flat bottomed grapples and they couldn't grab as much brush as my rake style. Then again my rake grapple has 70" jaws. I can make a brush pile up to my chin and move it all in one trip. That works for me!

I can also drive up to any log and pick it up every time on the first try. Drive into the log, close the jaws and it's held tight. Works every time and no chance of a heavy log falling back into the grapple and tweaking the arms of the loader.

And when it comes to digging out roots there is no comparison. You would be amazed what comes out of the ground with little effort. Here is a picture that shows what the grapple does in my ground, (have lots of roots and vines.) That was two passes, I picked the rock after my second pass.

For my needs the rake style was the better choice, but all grapples are fun!

The different styles shine in their own unique ways, but we sell A LOT more of the L shaped grapples than rake style.

To answer your question:
1. Primary use is moving slash / brush away from landing area as I bring felled trees up to buck the logs.
2. Secondary use is to back rake area after trees / brush are cleared to prepare for overcasting of seed.
3. Otherwise, while not clearing out woodlots into usable pasture, I will use it to clean up wasted hay from feeding areas, move downed trees and clean up about 1000 piles of limestone rock I'm finding in the woodlots I'm clearing. Apparently when they were growing tobacco here 60 years ago, the would pick rock from the tobacco fields and pile it up in what is now the woodlots.
The WR Long attachment you recommended to me may not be designed hold up to my uses. I need an attachment made from AR400 steel with a serious box tube as a backbone. I'm running it on an 80 HP skid steer with 3,000 lb lift capacity, so I can handle a little extra weight up front to get an attachment I won't wreck within the first year. Got maybe 12~15 acres to clear and I don't know how many tons of limestone to pick. Need a very heavy duty attachment. The claw style seems to be the best compromise for all my planned work.
All that said, I do appreciate the interest. It's good to hear from others with greater experience than my own.
