Thermistor Replacement

   / Thermistor Replacement #32
Hey,
I've been reading your problem and have a similar scenario, only my tractor cuts off after about 2 hours. it will start back up again without a problem, but almost immediately, it tries to stall out and the will not move faster than about 2 mph or it will stall. After I let it cool down, I have no problems. I've have changed the thermistor before and it may be that again, now I'm wondering if it's the fuel soleonid?

Thanks
John

zevanj2312,
I don't think you are looking at a bad thermistor. The thermistor is only in circuit for the first few seconds after you turn the key on. If you cycle the ignition key and hear the solenoid pull in the thermistor is working.

Have you checked your fuel filter? It sounds more like you are loosing fuel flow to a restriction in the tank or filter.

Please let us know what you find.

I have had an intermittent starting issue for the last 7 years or so. It happens about 6 times a year, summer and winter. Engine cranks and cranks and cranks, but never starts. The cure is to wait 3-4 minutes when it happens, and then it fires right up.

Does this sound like infamous thermistor issue? It has probably been 6 months since it happened last, so I'll likely have it bite me again soon.

Thanks

Yep, classic thermistor problem. You can verify it next time by listening for the fuel solenoid to pull in. Turn the key to 'on', clunk good, no clunk, likely a bad thermistor.

Thanks! I'll probably just go ahead and pick one up being they are so cheap.

after 2 yrs of intermittent starting problems on my 4300, i finally changed my thermistor. usually, it would act up and after a bit, would start. this time, it tried off and on for a cpl hrs last night, and this morning it still wouldn't start, so i pulled the fuse panel out to get to the thermistor. i already had a new one ready, it was just a matter of it getting bad enough to change.

my fuse panel didn't roll out quite as far as the pics earlier in the thread, but i got it out far enough to get the 2 wires i needed. i rerouted them under the panel, so that when reinstalled, they were still out front. i cut the old thermistor off, extended the wires, and then fashioned a 'quick connect' so replacement in the future would be easier. i left the new thermistor on the front side. it is sort of rube goldberged right now, until i think of a cleaner way to quick connect from the solid pin of the thermistor.

once i had a connection, turned the key, started right up. once i get it cleaned up, i should be able to change it thru the fuse panel door.
