I wanted to replace some old trailer tires at Costco, so I told the kid at the counter that I needed to replace 6.50x13 or B7813 tires with a new, equivalent metric size. He just looked at me and said "Mister, I have no idea what you are talking about". I laughed and said, OK, just give me 175/80/13s.

Yup. Years ago I had a greeny in the shop call up the parts house for a water pump for a beetle. He was pretty pissed at me. That and pneumatic fluid

I was working on a project once and needed a radiator hose ( 1 1/2 inch inside diameter and 18 inches long) The counterman at the local AutoZone freaked out because he needed to enter a vehicle into the computer to look it up. I could see all the radiator hoses hanging on the rack behind him, but he just wasn't up to the task to actually look at the hoses and find what I needed. He just kept telling me " I've got to have a vehicle and year" Drove a few miles further to a parts store where the counterman simply walked back, grabbed what I needed and sold it to me.
Needless to say, I've never gone back to AutoZone
I had this several times when i worked at a parts place over the year or so i was there, maybe close to 2? It was either for boats tractors or something else we usually did not have. I think tractors were in our books though. But boats were not. I would just take the hose and the description i needed back with me and most times if it was not going to be a quick grap id invite the customer back with me. Its not that hard to do?

When it came down to getting parts for my Yanmar I almost always ordered them online, very seldom did i get them locally. Now with my Deere skid steer, i just go down to my local dealer, tell them what I need, they look it up in the computer real quick, confirm with me that that is the right part, pay for it, and i am on my way in a few minutes. I must spend a lot of money there because everyone there knows me by name.:D

When racing stockcars, I needed an axle bearing for a Ford 9" rear end. Kid asked year and make of car? I said 81 malibue, what engine and carb? 358 chevy, 2 brl Holley 500 cfm, Kid said no listing. I said just put in 305, next what trans, I said power glide, Whats that he said?:confused2: I laughed as the manager set 2 bearings on the counter. He looked it up in the book, while I was messing with the kid.

Anouther one is a Ford starter solenoid, race car or tractor, its allways fun to mess with them, plus you know who to avoid next time . Once in a while they will surprise you, and grab a book.:D

Ask for your basic radiator cap and there is a complete mental disconnect.

For a few years, Chevy used an Isuzu engine in their small pickup, and I knew the matching model and year. But a Chevy parts counterman refused to sell me a part, after I mentioned it was for an Isuzu.

Should have just told him it was for a Chevy Luv. Those were fine little trucks. In 1984, my dad bought a new 1982 leftover model.

Local Tractor Supply has clueless staff. It is a question of how soon can you find it before they come and bother you. The manager is also clueless- tries to go by the book and incapable of seeing the whole picture. After a time or two of buying the wrong stuff because of him- I always look for myself.

I've shopped in at least 6 different Tractor Supply So. stores, and I've found the staff in them to vary tremendously. They have some very good, very knowledgeable, very helpful folks in some stores, and as you said, some that are pretty much clueless. I guess that's to be expected with any big company, but the thing that suprised me is that the prices for the same product frequently vary as much as the quality of the employees.:D
