Our oldest daughter and son in law tried to refinance their house loan a couple of years ago, it was denied. My daughter called the credit union and asked about it, loan person said to list her name first on application and resubmit (apparently she has better credit)..

While I agree and applaud your premise about teaching basic life skills, I however have needed and used trigonometry and algebra many times in my life since leaving high school. I would also be in favor of teaching basic DC electricity to include ohms law and how to use a multimeter in 8th grade science.

You have. Many others have. But not everyone has. Advanced math should be an elective, not a requirement. Same with the other technical skills you mentioned. All most people care about with electricity is that something works when they flip a switch.

Schools in general these days (not just high school) have become little more than college prep schools. They don't prepare kids for life. They prepare kids for college.

ALL high schools should be trade schools so the people that want to learn a trade can do that instead of being board with nonsense that doesn't help in everyday life.. Not everyone has the money or the desire to hang around a college and drink themselves into oblivion in a dorm room for four years..

You're not supposed to put stuff in there with your address on it!!
OK, I'll explain further...

The mail actually was coming to my dad... When he passed away, I wrote/explained to those that sent the mail, that he had passed away and please take him off their mail list. That didn't slow them down one bit!

SO, I then started to send "everything" back in their pre-paid envelope and that didn't phase them, so I started removing our name/address, and that did nothing either! In fact, I just started getting even more junk mail!

FINALLY, all of dad's affairs were taken care of, and my brother went to the PO and put in a change of address for my dad, to his address!

The PO won't forward junk mail, so that's what stopped it once in for all...

In the late 50's I was a Civil Engineering student at the University of Maine in Orono, and did not do that!

In the early 80's I was a Electronic Engineering student at Northeastern University in Boston and I didn't do it either but I know plenty that did and do..

I knew a good old boy who lived in our small town. Already twenty years ago, he told me how he was shooting the breeze with the teller at the bank, knowing each other, probably a lifetime. Then he asked to do, whatever he had come in for. She asked for I.D.. He couldn't believe it. THAT is what is wrong with banks, and has only gotten worse. Totally impersonal.

That is no doubt true, in general.

We have an incredible banking relationship.

We used to have a small regional bank. It got bought out and merged with a larger one. Customer service went downhill.

Then an acquaintance (we went to school together, a couple grades apart and she lived 1/4 mile down the road from me for a few of those years) approached me at a business networking event. We ended up moving all (except one HELoC) to them. That was about 5 years ago. I feel like a Customer, and the Customer is always Right, always Important, and the largest asset of the Bank.

OK, we have around 15 accounts with them (personal and several business checking, loans and mortgages), but the fact is, when I want a loan I simply email my friend and tell her how much I want and what it's for and she says "when should I come to your office to sign the paperwork?".

Also, granted, since we do have several loans/mortgages with them, we annually supply business tax returns, personal tax returns and personal financial statements. But, I have never worked with a bank that treated me this way. I honestly feel the way royalty must feel.

If you're in the VT/NH area, it would behoove you to check out Mascoma Bank.

(strangely, considering my story - we actually started with Connecticut Savings Bank, which was bought out/merged with Mascoma. But none of the Bad Stuff happened that you usually see with bank M&A)

I, too, agree that life skills are poorly represented in public education. Perhaps that's because public education was started in the times when parents taught their children those skills (along with a host of others no longer commonly available in the average home).

Anyways, in addition to DC electric, I think for the average homeowner basic AC electric would also be a good skill to have. Simple stuff, like how to replace a faulty switch or outlet. The amount of money spent on professionals to do such things has got to be staggering. BTW, I have no problem with how much it costs to do such things - professionals earn every dollar.

Related to above, in the last two months we stayed in two hotels where the outlets were so "weak" that they would not hold so much as a regular lamp plug, let alone a transformer plug..

Kinda sad. But at least you found a (somewhat) solution.
