You didn't learn a trade?

ALL high schools should be trade schools so the people that want to learn a trade can do that instead of being board with nonsense that doesn't help in everyday life.. Not everyone has the money or the desire to hang around a college and drink themselves into oblivion in a dorm room for four years..

In the late 50's I was a Civil Engineering student at the University of Maine in Orono, and did not do that!

They used to teach reading in school when I went.

Well.....I dunno ???
I left U. Maine, and went to Wentworth Institute in Boston, graduating from their Civil Engineering program.
Was then offered a site engineer job for Minuteman missile silo construction in North Dakota.
Turned that job down at the last minute, to go to Navy flight training in Pensacola.
Spent 6 years as a Navy pilot (some Vietnam).
Left the Navy to go to work for Northwest Airlines.
Spent 33 years there, and retired (age 60) as a 747-400 captain.

Guess I never really did learn a "trade" though.

I know a bunch of stuff I would teach kids. Teach about the 50% Divorce rate for almost half a century, and why that might be.

Anyway. God Bless the USA. I was on a road trip to Buffalo, getting my transformer for my newest genny and Breaded Clams. It might surprise you, what us Canadians don't have access to.

Went to a Tops market. Delighted to see the clams on sale if you bought 5 packages. They only had 7, and I bought all. The young girl charged me full pop for each one, and when I questioned it, she stated that I bought 7, not 5! When I protested, the girl offered no apology , or even understood what my problem was. The customer behind me, suggested Customer Service, where a somewhat more aware lady, corrected the matter and in fact offered all 7, at the sale price.

Ever notice that the folks at the cash registers, can't even count your change back to you?? They have to look at the cash register to even figure out how much to give you!

In 2005 I built a seasonal residence (did much of the work myself) on the coast of Nova Scotia.
Loved the people and area, but just sold last Oct.(13 yrs.) as it became too much/too far to take care of.
I most certainly DO understand what you Canadians do not have access to.
And the prices as well....WOW!

I bought a cargo trailer, and brought MANY of my building/plumbing/heating supplies from New Hampshire.
MUCH better selection, and MUCH better prices.
10% Provincial import tax is waived for seasonal residents.

I will miss Nova Scotia, and my Canadian friends, this Summer.
Wonderful people !!!!

I do that. Can't add nor subtract a lick without a machine. Jethro was the smart one in my class. Guess we're back to that whole 'exceptional' thing again, eh?

Lets see, in HS i took required English, so i know the difference in board and bored. Math (algebra, geometry, trig, calculus intro). Science (biology, chemistry, physics), French (only foreigners language offered), typing, PE. and art.

We did have the choice to go to a vocational (trade) school instead, but that would have been boring.

I would have liked to have taken wood shop, but didnt have the time. Besides, we had tools at home and i learned woodworking on my own, plus as 4H projects. I learned small engine repair in 4H. I used to rebuild mower engines a lot. Also electrical stuff, i was building electronic items all the time, including soldering together my own power supplies, etc. I also learned construction while a teenager (framing, roofing, electrical, plumbing). I was driving 10 ton dump trucks by the time i was a freshman in college. And front end loaders, dozers. Of course i was driving a tractor much earlier
I still have many of the items i built in HS, like the lamp I'm using now.

I say all this to say it all helped me in everyday life, and none would i call nonsense.

Forgot to mention, i grew up dirt poor. I worked summers to help pay my way in college. And i never drank, but i did have the desire to learn.

Very few people understand that making change is easiest by "adding" rather than "subtracting". :)
