JB, looking at that cord and twist style plugs (Hubbell?), it looks like the kind used on generators to hook up power to the transfer box. It's probably worth $30 to $50 by itself when used as a cord, but not worth nearly that much as scrap.

I wouldn't scrap it, if anything maybe put it on Craigslist.

I have a 4 wire extension for my generator, or welder, but it's 6 or 8 gauge good for 50 amp. This being only 10 gauge, it's kinda limited.

I have never understood why places just throw stuff in dumpsters, makes more sense to leave it out and let people pick thru it. Was going by an elementary school about 3 miles distant last week, the school district is closing it, they had about a dozen pianos out front marked "free"....a few days later wife and I were driving by and I saw a bunch of guys with a big flatbed trailer pulling out, they must have taken all of them from what the trailer looked like.

Funny, one of my neighbor's is advertising pianos for $200!!

Depends on what shape they are in--cracked soundboards, broken strings, worn out dampers and hammers---can cost more to repair than the piano is worth.

The school pianos might have been good until they set them outside in the elements to wreck the soundboards.

They probably put them out because of the cost of tuning a piano versus no tuning involved for electronic keyboards. So there is a fairly good chance they might have been usable pianos.

JB.

I sold it today on Craigslist for $100. The guy was happy to get it, seemed like he knew what he was looking for. I couldn't think of a need I would use it for, so I listed it this morning, and got the call in about an hour.

Only the one call, but that's all it takes. It's weird sometimes, but that's how I sold my last house "by owner" Paid advertising for 2 weeks and only got 1 call, but that couple really wanted the house and bought it. I was a little nervous with the lack of interest, but in the end 1 was all I needed.

Sorry for the hijack

They've been steeling AC units here in NC for years now. Got so bad a couple years ago that guys wouldn't install the outdoor unit on multifamily jobs until the day before inspection.

There is a company that manufacturers an alarm system for residential and commercial units that utilizes a pressure control so if the unit is cut into (to steel the copper) presto, the alarm goes off. Works pretty well. You could spend more money than a car for a commercial unit sitting up on the roof. Not a bad idea (particularly where you live) to protect an investment.

There are a couple of different alarm systems out there, but this one is one of the better ones IMO

Had my Cousin over to top off my freon, I remembered this thread ,so I asked him how much and outside unit was worth as scrap.

He told me his son had broke a couple of old units down a week back and averaged $100 in scrap each, they where bigger units (5 ton). He said he has to replace quite a few each year that have been stolen or vandalized.

Sigarms, in the last couple of years here in the metro-mess (Dallas/Ft. Worth, the thieves have been getting the rooftop AC's pretty often, usually on the businesses that are closed for the night. Oddly enough, those thieves are the only ones I've heard of that get caught. A couple where caught about a month ago near Dallas, since one had decided to extend his "forray" into the business through and exhaust duct and got stuck.
