I think as the economy goes downward, more people will be pressed into doing bad things.

What gets me the most is the mindset, the brashness of entitlement and just them thinking they are doing it to survive or whatever.

I feel for your neighbor.

Protect yourselves accordingly.

In New Orleans, "the projects" were built in the 1930s for the poorer class of people but they had copper gutters and downspouts. They were all still there around 1965 when a different class of people moved into the projects. Within 6 months they were all gone.

Would a game camera (the ones that are triggered on motion) be usefull for rural security cams or am I out of line?

I know a few people who use them for exactly that purpose...

I work on a few of the old local churches and if you think that the bums would treat the church's with any degree of respect you are wrong, this past year they stole copper k gutter that was just put up a month earlier, this was on the rectory's garage, had to make a racket but the priest didn't hear a thing, they also stole the bottom sections of the leader pipes on the church, these were 6" round corrugated copper, replacement cost was close to $300. per 10' section just for material.
A few years ago a couple of entrepreneurs tried ripping a leader pipe off another church and the pipe contacted the electric service line, there was evidence of a short and the bums left the pipe hanging after they most likely got zapped.

It is getting crazy, for someone to be ripping wire out of the ground, also heard about them climbing cell towers to steal from there as well, and awhile back some one posted something about primary power lines being stolen on rural roads. that's getting close to an act of terrorism, an attack on public infrastructure, they do deserve to be shot on sight, maybe that would be a deterrence.

My local police ran a sting operation for 30 days and made over 50 arrests... not all were for stolen copper... some had outstanding warrants.

The Hospital where I'm the Engineer called my very early on a Sunday morning to tell me a toilet was not working... just as I was to give the person you know what, she tells me none of the toilets or sinks work.

I hurried on down and as I came to the intersection I saw a geyser of water about 25' into the air.

Copper/Brass thieves sawed out the two Back flows serving the entire facility under 75 psi water pressure.

For maybe $30 they put all the patients in jeopardy and cost the Hospital about 2K to get water restored and replace the Back flows...

I just finished a job today replacing all the copper water lines in a house & A/C system that was stolen. The guy is trying to sell the house and it is vacant. Thieves make a mess of things when they steal this stuff. I make good money off doing this type of work. But, I hate it for the victims

My barber is Katrina "relocated" from New Orleans. Yesterday, as I was getting a haircut, I was telling him about Eddie Walker's neighbor's theft. He said that in many places in New Orleans after Katrina, they had to remove the drywall from houses. When they did, that left all the copper pipe and electrical wire exposed for easy theft. I hadn't thought about it, but that is probably all too true.

Yes, there are many reports of people's wires and plumbing being stolen from gutted houses. The sad part is that many times they steal the new copper plumbing as soon as the plumbers leave since the houses are uninhabited. Many are switching to plastic pipe now. The scrap yards love the brisk business and although the law requires them to check drivers licenses, it is impossible to trace wire and pipes. Even all the copper flower urns were stolen from a large local cemetary. They caught these crooks and recovered a few of the urns.
