Hey, Tpig, I don't think it's the regulator. My FX24D hasn't had a regulator in it for over a year and the fuel shut off valve still works. U said the wiring was flaky, is the original wiring harness still there?? Can u turn the ignition on and jump the starter solenoid to start without overheating the fuel shut off wire?? Ignition on will just open the valve. I don't know what that will tell us about the short, but it should answer the question about mechanical damage from over heating.

It kind of sounds to me, like Reb might have the answer. It does sound like the battery cable just might be bad. That would do it, as it wouldn't be grounding right and be hunting for another path. If it were I that is something I would check, as they do go bad, not real often, but sometimes.

Well, heck! If you have a good frame to battery negative connection maybe it's time to go over the wiring harness with a fine tooth conb. If someone in a certain southeast Asian country overhauled the tractor, it was probably made to work with existing or improvised components. I'd be looking for bullet connectors with slipped covers, unraveling electrical tape on splices, maybe even some bare spots that could be backfeeding something on that ground circuit. Good luck, as for me i'm headed out for a (yuck) graveyard shift.

I know you checked the connection but was the main ground cable attached to the radiator support or the frame?

I just happen to have 2 wiring harnesses from an FX24 on the shelf if you feel the need for a replacement. also an FX18.
And 3 fuel shut off gizmos that are causing you so much grief !

Replace your battery cables!!! Just do it! I have had them on cars look brand new and be so crusty inside that current could not run through!!!! I am unfamilar with your tractor model to be of any more help!!!!
