It has been one of those days, one of THOSE weeks already, and I was thinking....

On the way home, saw a neighbors fence line taken out by a big boom truck, road blocked off too..... took out a utility pole too.....

Hope everyone was OK, but darn.... what was the person doing? It looked like a hundred feet of field fence were taken out. That will be a lot of work.

We just had a 87 yr old try to pass a fuel tanker truck on I94. He clipped the truck, causing a multi car pileup, lucky that no one died. $730K damage to the road, mostly due to fire. Why is the old boy still driving?

They should require vision and reaction tests and possibly put a limit on night driving. It should be capability based not age based alone.

I've a 90 yr old MIL who is still fairly spry and drives well. But she is in Fulton, MS and doesn't drive 4 lane, far or fast. Most of her driving is to many local relatives (< 3 miles) and speed limits below 45mph. To even think of restricting people like her is terrible. Her freedom is at stake and she is no danger, to herself or others, in the situations she drives in. Now her 95 year old brother is getting so he shouldn't drive at night.

I would vote for that. People age at different rates.. We had to take the keys away from the mother in law at about age 74. But some people are doing great at age 74 and beyond.. Maybe start testing at about age 75 each time the license is renewed. We test young people to see if they are ready. Perhaps we should test our seniors at some point too. Easy for me to say, I have a ways to go.

In Ohio, a vision test is required every few years to renew your license. Based on the results, the driver could be restricted to daytime driving or have the license revoked.

I wouldn't support a straight cutoff age. I was much more dangerous as a teenager than my father was in his nineties.

sometimes brains are more important than reaction time
Sure some accidents are caused by old drivers
I am approaching 80
still have pilots licence
and use it regularly

Everyone can put up a number where they think no driving should be allowed. I don't think anyone of those same folks would be so eager to let go of their license when they reach that age IF they think they can still drive well.
I could support an age based driving test and vision tests are already part of every state and foreign country I have ever been licensed in.

In Texas the regular drivers license is good for 6 years and may be renewed online or by telephone, but at least every second renewal must be done in person so they make a new picture and see if you can read the eye chart. Between the ages of 79-84, you must renew in person. 85 and older must renew in person and the license is only good for 2 years instead of 6.

Now regular, periodic testing sounds like a good idea, but how much more are we willing to pay for a license and/or more taxes. The DPS already has long lines in many places, so to hire more people to do the testing costs money from somewhere.

I'm 75 and I'd be more than willing to take a written and/or driving test if it didn't cost more or have to stand in line too long to do it.:laughing:

Actually they do...rates start going back up once you hit 60, though not to the levels of drivers under 25. This may vary by state.

Another factor is the number of accidents indirectly caused by older drivers...grandma poking along in her Corrola doing 35 in a 50. How many people take chances just trying to get around her? Not gonna show up as her being at fault, but she sure contributed indirectly.

I would be in favor of mandatory driver retesting of all ages periodically. I would not consider putting an age limit on driving. My Mother is just a few days away from 89 is a very good driver. She drives the speed limit and is not indecisive in her actions at all. I see lots of younger people out there who need retesting and probably would not pass.

I am usually not in favor of more government interference but I believe this would be a good exception.

At what age should horses stay off the road or take an annual find their way home test.

They'll give a license to anyone in California. I don't think age should be a deciding factor, I just wish people had to learn to drive BEFORE they were given a license! (oh, and I wish California would enforce the 'you must have insurance to drive' law, too)
