That's not really an unusual group. One time, last year, I was out mowing in my back pasture just before dark. I was on my small tractor with the rotary cutter making all sorts of noise. I guess I wasn't paying attention because I never saw them coming. I made my turn and when I came around, there was 27 hogs out in the field with me. They were all together in a tight group and sort of heading my way, but maybe angling off to the right. I kept mowing towards them, and they all stoped to stare at me as I got closer and closer.
There was one really large boar in the group. Maybe 200 pounds, if not, he was high 200's for sure. The rest were sows and large piglets all in the 80 to 150 pund range. It was pretty impressive.
When I got to about 20 yards of them, they sort of split in half. The big boar and a little over half of them went off to my right, and kept going down to Lake Marabou, where I lost them in the trees. They were not in a panic rush, just a fast sort of trot. The others just sort of milled off to me left as I passed them. They just sort of milled around until I made my turn and came back at them. Then they walked off into the woods, in the oposite direction then the other group had gone.
I've had moe encounters with hogs then I can remember. Sometimes they suprise me, but most of the time I come up on them while they are eating and making allot of noise. I don't have any fear of them, and don't consider them dangerous. I know some people disagree with this, but that's what I've come to believe.
Most of the time, I just watch them, or go back to the house to see if Steph wants to shoot one. Of couse, we've watched them together too. A few times, we've waited for a big boar to come out, other times, we just couldn't get the shot that we wanted. She's an excellent shot, but she lacks confidence and tends to take a very long time before squeezing the trigger. She's five for five, so she knows what she's doing. She could easily have shot three times that many, but it's never been a priority for either of us to kill them.
