Things you learn after a week with no power

Most people can't live without it at all.No idea how to cook or even what kind of food to get so it will not go bad.
So people think that the city can keep pumping water without power so they let their kids play in the hose.
If your neighborhood is screwed up people will dive through grove sand in a car just to see and when they get stuck ask for your help when they would not have helped you.

Several years ago we were out of power for 7 days due to a massive ice storm. Temps were running between MINUS 20 and ZERO. Our road was snowed in for the first 3 days because the county plows couldn't get to us. The farmer up the road made a pass down our road to barely open us up. 3 of us got together and went out to get our hands on every generator we could find. A few others called around to see if anyone needed food or medical assistance. At least in my neighborhood, the power outage brought people together. But I suppose the climate and the road conditions kept others away from us because NOBODY was out joyriding at that time to see what conditions other people were faced with.

I have found there is a basic ignorance of how most municple services operate among city dwellers.

Re the site seers getting stuck, many have no concept of what a car can drive in.

People are pretty helpful here but it is a very rural area.

You'd like to think the worst of time brings out the best in all people.


You can do without a lot, but you can never, ever have enough clean water. Or a way to make it clean.
