UPDATE FROM THE OP: After much study and consideration, I decided to get one each. Yesterday I shook hands with a dealer to buy a new Polaris Ranger 570cc side x side UTV. Very nice unit. I will go there later today to sign papers and pay for it (once the freezing rain stops).
I will also buy a used snowmobile as there are many many sleds on the market right now. I did look at some used ATV/UTVs but found the prices pretty high, and the machines showed considerable wear and tear. Google "ATV riding youtube" and you will see some real good examples of trail riding--- looks like fun.
At least this way I can get out several months of the year with my wife for some recreation. Since we're both north of 60 years old, we ain't looking for the extreme riding performance you see on videos.
