We live 20 miles from the mighty Copper River, the home of the world famous "Copper River Reds" red salmon. Sure beats rod and reel or dip net.

I've been helping my buddy rebuild the baskets and we finally got it in the water last week. No Kings yet but the Reds are running as are the Steelhead, Burbot, Lamprey Eel and Suckers. Good year for fish.

Food prices are stupidly high up here and any wild fish or game is very welcome and necessary.

Brings back good memories - Doofy. We would go down to Copper Center and get dried Reds from the natives. They would split them length wise and hang them on lines to dry.

Many of the more industrious fish wheels would have a "deflector boom" - up river a bit. An attempt to deflect crap coming downriver. I think the idea being - you didn't have to watch the wheel all the time.

Arlyn - what method of fishing do those boats use? If the back opened - I'd guess they are seiners or gill netters.

oosik,
It's been in the 80s & 90s and the Copper is running high and tons of trees and debris is coming down the river and messing up the wheel. A "deflector" might certainly help with that. We have been talking about it. We had a fresh Red for dinner last night. Yum!

My cousin has a wheel going . . . not that far from you I think . . . I believe they are using a deflector, I'll have to ask . . . a Red for dinner last night . . . :drink:

We are in the perfect spot to run a deflector boom out in to the river. We moved our wheel down river 100', around a small bend. Current is perfect there and only 6' from the bank.

My Dad and brothers used to like fishing in the Copper River. But on my first trip to Alaska (summer 1972), I waded out into the river to try to cast to where I wanted my lure to go, and I quickly decided that the water was too cold for me.

Bird - for sure, on the wading out. The Copper is a BIG river and nothing to be fooling around with. Especially this time of year when it's in full flood.

I think I can smell fresh Red salmon being bar-b-qued. Man, those were good times.

We just go to the fish market and buy it. Fish from Lake Superior shipped from Petersons Fish Market,
Hancock Michigan

Here is there boats. Nice family that we've know for many years

Love Petersons, Went to MTU and family from Calumet.

Those boats keep the crew safe in high seas and bad weather. almost like the spirit animal of the modern unsinkable coast guard boats. You can see in those photos that a little ice wont stop them! The waves in a like like superior are much closer together than in the ocean, where a boat that size would ride up and down. On superior it may be riding the crests of 2 10 foot waves with the center out of the water.

they are catching mostly walleye, lake trout and whitefish.

Those boats operate in cool temps year-around, so they are covered and heated. Of course they get caught in rough water which being covered helps to keep the lake out. Having said that, the waves do occasionally go over and they'll see nothing but green water out the portholes. The Peterson's have told us stories about going into a wave and seeing only water outside. These boats are generally around 30ft long so that's not a good day to be on da lake. Its terribly hard, dangerous and cold work to be a fisherman out there and their boats are unsinkable, until they sink. Are you sure they can keep walleye??? I don't believe they can.

We reside about 1/2 a mile west of tech. When will you be back to visit us?

NOAA says they harvested 40000 lbs of walleye in 2017 from the great lakes, could not find superior specific data quickly, so not sure. Tried to go skiing at Bohemia this past winter, but our flight got cancelled and we had to skip the whole trip. Hopefully make it up there next winter. Last year we hit a sliver of the UP on our way to Nakina, Ont. for a week of fishing. I lived on garnet and 6th for a few years.

spirit animal, as they are almost fully enclosed like the coastguard boats.

would love to go to Alaska and see the wheels in person.
