Like Bird said, we try to, as you see... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Tough to resist.

Well, here's the first of two more pics of THE cup. This one shows entire cup resting on the floor upside down, with a floppy disk leaning up against it to provide a sense of scale. The overall intent is to show the bottom "cup holder" mechanism, which will be detailed in the next message, along with a closer view.

Ok, here's the second picture, a close-up of the bottom. In a private e-mail to Scruffy, I mentioned to him that the magnetic sign material was great most of the time, and prevented the cup from sliding on the fender, but it wasn't strong enough to hold the cup down when I was bush-hogging an old corn-field. So Scruffy promptly responded by telling me I needed an old hard drive magnet. The next thing I know, he's sent me some of them! (Thanks, Scruffy!)

What you're looking at in this picture is a ring of black magnetic sign material glued to the bottom of the cup and one of the hard drive magnets glued into the depression in the center. Originally, I covered the whole bottom with the sign material, but when that wasn't enough, I cut the part covering covering the depression in the center out with scissors (thus the ragged edge) and glued the hard drive magnet into it. I used Marine Goop for both jobs. (I love that stuff!) These magnets are so strong that I didn't really want them in contact with the fender, so I didn't build it up flush, but left it 1/8" or so below the surface of the sign material ringing the outer edge. There's room for another magnet, but I can't imagine needing it, because it'll hold the cup to the side of the refrigerator, even when full of water! Yet, because it doesn't touch the fender, it's still easy to pick up, as long as you tilt it first, instead of just trying to pick it straight up.

I was wondering how long it would take before the hard drive magnet would be used. When you said the magnetic sign material I was alittle skeptical about it's strengh. Now a hard drive magnet man those things come in handy. I bought a few off ebay awhile back and for their size you can't beat them in holding power.

Glue one to a small plastic dish and attach to fender then when your hooking up your hitch pins and click pins will stay in place. No more looking in the grass for a dropped pin.

Glad it worked out Mark! Never tried the Marine Goop, but I do use (being an old ex-auto mechanic) Automotive Goop, which is also waterproof. May not work quite as well as the Marine Goop for basically an outdoor application, or one subject to quite a bit of moisture.

I had a funny experience last week with THE CUP. I was working on a job site and some guys installing siding kept looking at me as I went back and forth, particularly as I crossed a little drainage ditch. Eventually, I figured out that they were wondering why the cup didn't fall off. After that, I made sure I only lifted it to drink from it when it was on the away side, so they couldn't see the bottom of it. Eventually the guy who was apparently the crew supervisor came over when I was stopped for a minute and said he had to know how the cup stayed on the fender. He said he had to find out because his guys were killing too much time taking bets on when it was going to fall off. I told him that whoever bet it wasn't going to was the winner and showed him the magnet. It was a bit anti-climactic, for them, I think, but I sure got a kick out of it...

Mark... I'm laughing. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif Excellent... I'm out of town (actually a couple time zones over) and have seen a bunch of 7-11 stores here... I'll try to stop and see if they have one of those cups. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Although will they let me take that on the plane or will I get charged for excess baggage?

Muhammad - You should be able to get it on the plane if you count it as one of the two pieces of carry-on luggage you're allowed. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

If they don't have them, though, let me know and I'll pick up one for you and send it to you. Just don't hold your breath - Scruffy is waiting for me to ship him something, too, though it's considerably harder to ship than THE CUP (my original Kubota tractor seat).

Mark, I just had an idea... will a laptop fit inside of the cup? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Do you have a cu. ft. capacity figure yet?

No, Muhammad, my laptop certainly won't fit. About any PDA you can name would, though... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
