Went to turn off engine while in the process of attaching the backhoe but it kept running, even with the key off and out. Totally went dead a few minutes later, then got nothing turning the key. Panic began to set in as it was getting late this afternoon, and I knew dealer would be closing soon. Got the service guy and he said i probably had a blown fuse. Took off the screen under the steering column and saw at once the neg lead to the battery had popped right off. Not sure why this kept the engine running with the key out, but put it back o /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gifn nice and tight, and all is well.

As you just figured out, diesels don't need electric power to run. Give the the correct amount of fuel at the right time along with good compression and they'll run all day long /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

In the days before the safety cops went crazy, the method to shut down most all diesel tractors was to to pull a manual shut off. It either choked the air intake down or closed off the fuel to the fuel injector pump. The battery was only needed for turning the starter and working the lights.

Now adays with manufactures needing immediate engine shutdown when a safety switch is tripped, most went with an electrically controlled fuel cutoff solenoid mounted on the fuel injector pump since the need was for an electrical control for shutdown.

With most Kubotas, when the engine won't shutdown when the key is turned off, it is generally due to a blown fuse. Many folks mistakenly add additional lighting and use the same fused circuit as the fuel cutoff solenoid. Any problem with the new lighting circuit will blow that fuse.

Looks like in your case a loose ground was the cause.
