When learning surveying under a previously mentioned curriculum...we had access to some original surveying field notebooks...many were from previously unexplored areas of FL...there were several mentions of lost rod men etc. due to things like indians, quicksand, alligators etc., etc...
Early railroad and route location notebooks often referenced having to move graveyards...there are several references to finding skeletons that had clumps of hair in the finger bones...indicating that the subjects had only been presumed dead when buried...!
