Thoughts on a Yanmar

Underwaterdog, yeah, I remember seeing a chart at some point. I'll have to search for it again. This "G" is much shorter than the others...wonder if it had a specific use or something that was the reason for it being shorter?

On a side note...I have an uncle in Franklinton. He's a dairy farmer, last name Bienvenue. You don't happen to know him? I never visited much, but he had annual dove hunts on his property that my grandfather would bring me to as a young kid. I haven't been out there since the late 80's.

Didn't I read somewhere on this forum that the Grey markets are rated by PTO hp, or should I say PTO ps,(a ps is .98 of a bhp) and the US models were rated at engine HP? It really aggravates me when I read stuff and I go back to find it I can't remember where I saw it. :(

That's what I remember also.

From Wilkipedia, the PS (German: Pferdestarke = horse strength) is defined as:

1 PS = 75 kp.m/s = 0.73549875 kW = 0.9863201652997627 hp (SAE)

although I think there's a few more significant digits in the SAE HP conversion than would ever be necessary for any practical purpose involving a tractor. I think you could call it 1 PS = .99 SAE HP and be plenty close enough.

Is the PS used for the Japanese PTO horsepower rating?

Also: I've read that the YM2210 engine (2T80 something??) is full of parts that interchange with the YM2000/YM240, but it has 2 hp more. Is it larger displacement, or they just turned up the wick, or what? Is its 22 PTO hp obtained at higher engine rpm than the 2TR20A-X, which is rated at 2400?

Could I use its injector pump and get a 10% hp boost? :)

Thanks Tom! That's where I saw it.
And Tony, I do know them, and I sent you a PM.

California,
The engine plate of my 2500 with a 3T80 has 25 PS @ 2800 rpm. The plate on the 3110D with a 3T84 has 31 PS @ 2600 rpm.
I have read that the Japanese tractors are rated by PTO HP. My chart also says that the 3T80 in the 2500 has 30HP. It also shows the 3T84 in a 3000 has is 33 HP and a 3110 has 35 HP. So what the difference is there I don't know. I don't know how accurate this chart is. It shows the 2210, 2210D, and 2210BD with a 2T90. It would be interesting to know if there is a pattern to the engine models. It pretty easy to figure out that the first number denotes the number of cylinders. The letters could be anybody's guess. Could the last 2 numbers be the cylinder diameter in mm? It would be interesting to know if there is an engine model number nomenclature.

I just found something...
Looking at the specs in my I & T service manual, a 2T73A has 73mm bore and a 75mm stroke. A 2T84 has a 84mm bore and a 90mm stroke. A 2TR20A-X has a 90mm bore and a 90mm stroke. A 3T84 has a 84mm bore and a 90mm stroke. So some of the engines have the cylinder bore stamped right in the model #. So it looks like the 2TR20A is similiar in specs to the 2T90(in the 2210), which I am guessing is a 90mm bore. Could it have a longer stroke? Or could it be that they are rated differently. You can only do so much by increasing fuel. It will richen the mixture and make it smoke more, and the combustion won't be as efficient.

I'm not at the house to check the engine plate, but I'm about sure my YMG2000D had the 3T80 engine also. In my case it is detuned to 20hp at PTO.

Underwaterdog, got your message and replied. Small world.

My manual says the following: Japanese tractors are rated by PTO HP instead of engine HP. Teh first two #'s in all Yanmar tractors indicate the PTO HP. To convert the PTO to engine HP you will need to multiply the PTO HP by 1.2; This is the approximate figure but takes into account the amount of power that is lost by turning the transmission gears etc.

Rgood,
I've read that too about the power ratings. This is the plate on the engine I am referring too, My 3110 has 31 PS on the engine plate, and my 2500 has 25 PS on the plate. So do you think the engine plate is showing PTO HP? And for the purposes of discussion, I am using PS and HP interchangeably, since there is so little difference. If you had a 100 PS engine, its output would be roughly 99 HP. With even the largest of the compacts that is less than 1/2 HP difference. On a lighter note, conversions are not always that close. I had a neighbor come over and ask me where he could find a place that could put 240 PSI in his rear tractor tires. When I looked at the tire closely, it was KPA, not PSI. That converts to roughly 35 PSI.

I am a recent new owner of the smallest yanmar(I think), a YM135 sub compact. 13hp diesel. She is really no larger than the larger old Cub Cadets, yet can run cat 1 3pt implements, has hi/lo rear end with diff lock and rear 2spd pto. I am constantly amazed at what this small tractor can do, and I have yet to find its limit. Most of my work is just general chores, and in time I will pick up a small finish mower for the back. For your money, the Yanmars are hard to beat. I live in a heavy compact tractor use area, lots of grape vineyards and small farms in and around Erie, PA. We have 4 Kubota dealers in just Erie County, and a couple of JD and one CaseIH. I know at least 7 Yanmars in just my general area of the county. Research who in your area sells the Yanmars and is recomended by others on this forum. Be willing to travel to get what you want as well. You wont be sorry if you take the time to get exactly what you want, at the quality that you want. Good Luck and let us all know what ya get! Mike
