i was looking at the masseys and was interested in the 1428. it seemed to be well built and have a good amount of power, they had a hydro on the lot. but i would probably go w/ the gear trans as i need to do more ag type work. they quoted me 15.5k tractor and loader. the dealer said he would cut me a break if i was to pay up front instead of financing. i still need to go to the nh,kubota, in my quest. i've looked at kioti, mahindra, cub cadet,jd. i think i've ruled out the mahindra and cubs. just lookinh for some opinions on the masseys and info if anyone has owned one. thanks jim

If it is like the larger 1400 series tractor, it would make you a fine tractor. Sorry that I can't help you more, my experience is with the larger 1200s, 1400s and the ag tractors.

I considered the 1433 when I was looking. If they had priced it right I may have bought it. You commented your doing Ag type work. Not much experience with that but the 1428 seems a little light there. I wouldn't consider my L3130, or any smaller compacts, suited for that. Are you moving round bales, plowing, ???. The loader available on that machine has some serious Ag limits. True Ag work takes some weight and HP to do efficiently. Sorry, but I can't comment much further on the 1428 except to say Iseki seems to manufacture some nice equipment. They are a little more "steel" oriented than some of the others.

Good Luck! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

thanks for some insight guys. i forgot to post that the ag work that i will be doing w/ the tractor i buy will be raking hay and hay tedding. which i think that a tractor of that size will handle fine, as the rake is a ground drive unit and the tedder is a smaller 2 spindle model.i have 2 older jds for the heavier work.

I don't have much experience with the 1428 other than a brief try at a dealer. The 1428 seems to be well built. The control deck is OK for a small guy like me but is a little tight for a big guy. Overall a good unit but with low price/performance ratio compared to other makes in the same tier. In my area 15.5K can fetch you a NH TC30, Kioti CK30, Kubota 3400DT (a little tight here you'll have to bargain hard), Mahindra 3015, Branson 3510(again a little tight) etc.. All these units are auguably better than the 1428 either on HP, features, and/or specs.

If pricing in your area is high for other tractors as well and you are comfortable with the dealer, I think it's OK, but I definitely recommend you take a look at others before you decide.

For the raking, you need a tractor with larger tires (more ground clearance) such as the 1429, 1433 or 1440. With that low of ground clearance you will be dragging the windrows.

Most of those are not the same size of tractor and some are economy models. When comparing units, you need to compare apples to apples.

At the risk of drawing the ire of an Elite member. I respecfully submit that those were simply my thoughts. I guess that, in my simplistic view, so long as I keep them in the same cost range I can compare all fruits.

I'll be more careful next time.

I have a 1428v hydro and really like the tractor. I've used it for brush hogging, fel work (moved a ton of gravel when I repaired the barn foundation), and some grading with the rear blade.

When I looked in my area, the NH was sky high pricewise, the 4210 deere was 2k more, and the 'buto b2910 was about a grand more.

It's been a fine tractor for me.
