Hi,

I'm looking to build a bunch of 3 board fence and I am looking at getting an auger for the FEL. Locally, they have the Eterra line (1500, 2500, 3500), the SKU's correlate to the Ironcraft models - are they the same thing?

My tractor has 9.5 gpm of flow (MX5400) so I was thinking about going with the 2500 model. They only have the side mount frame - how much does that matter? They are sold out of the center frame, but I could wait until they restock if it's preferable - slightly cheaper.

We'll probably do 4x4 posts with 6x6's for gates and maybe the corners. Some folks drive in the rounded posts around here, but the ones I've seen are pretty crooked. Anyway - for those posts I was thinking of the 12" bit.

Thanks for your help!

bumping this up. I think these are the same ones as Ironcraft sells.

I have an Eterra. I'd never heard of Ironcraft before you mentioned it but it certainly looks like they're the same. Can't say for sure though. I've been quite satisfied with my Eterra. I completely rebuilt the mount because the angle on it didn't work properly with my machine. Yesterday I added a side mount up higher on the plate so that I could drill some holes underneath a lean-to overhang. I wouldn't want to have just a side mount though. It's not hard to change if you have decent fabricating skills.

I have a 9 inch auger and it drills holes plenty large enough for a 4x4 post. Even a 6x6 really. Just how much stuff are you wanting to put in the holes after the posts are in the hole? Am I missing something here? Should I be drilling larger diameter holes for my posts? A 4x4, which is really a 3.5x3.5, measures just under 5 inches across the corners. And a 9 inch auger drills a hole about 10 inches in diameter in my ground.

That depends what the post is for. Fence line posts don't need anywhere near the support that gate or corner posts do. It can be easier to get material packed around the post if there's a little more room to work with. Little larger hole gives a little extra slop in case the hole got drilled a bit off center. It's easier to use a clamshell digger to clean out the last of the loose material if the hole is a bit bigger. If a person is going to have just one auger bit, a 12 inch one provides more flexibility. I have a 6", 12" and 24" and regularly borrow an 18" from a neighbor (who uses my 24" on occasion).

My Land Pride auger mounts centered or on the side. I never found the need to use it side mounted.
I use a 9" auger for 4x4's and 3x6 split rail posts.
