Yes Teflon tape can be used successfully, but it also can cause serious issues.
In most manufacturing plants, a Japanese manufacturing practice called Polk-yoke is commonly used when setting up standard manufacturing processes. Polk-yoke is simply designing a process so that the operator can't do it wrong. IE: it only goes together one way, all the screws are the same size, etc...
Polk-yoke your assembly and don't use Teflon tape, use a product designed for the application to make sure you don't have problems.
